ABC23 Talks BHS Issues: What's Wrong?
You really have to read the full article to get where this piece is going... I hope you read it and comment. - Nick, ABC23 When Jackie Parks asked me to write a blog about the current Bakersfield High School crime controversy, I at first hesitated. Parks was clearly ruffled about the BHS Blue & White article that stated kids were getting iPods and cell phones ripped off. I was more concerned with the idea of criminals out of control. 14 comments from 7 users

The cruel farce of "multiculturalism" will never be allowed open debate because no matter what you say it will cause you to be attacked as "racist." And so long as the Mexican culture and language is encouraged here in America as a result of the wealthy demanding slave labor including Bush saying we should all learn Spanish the problem will only get worse. And children are paying the price for this cruel farce.

The lyrics of your kids song say ita all esse Its just too bad many "races" want their cake and eat it too. On the one hand they want to use their "minority" status (Latino, Black, Asian, etc.) for sepcial treatment, but on the other they want others to be "color blind" when dealing with them as far as loans, etc. (things they percieve as "white" advantaged things) What many of them really want is to be placed in a privelaged position relative to others because of their "race" (ethnicity). Full Stop! (Period for those of you non-anglophiles) - haha! Its all [edit.] esse! People are people. Until we get there all this "multi-culturalism" is just a pound of hieffer dust on yer boots! posted by

German is my second language and I wouldn't attempt to force it on anyone. De facto segregation is an ugly fact as any resident of Watts will tell you, and gangs are committed to "ethnic cleansing" wherever they gain a foothold. It only makes a bad situation worse when six against one is a hate crime only if the six are Caucasians. There is no Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson to be found on the side of Caucasians. The fear of being called a "racist" has a stranglehold on open dialog about the problems.

Took draft physical in Fresno with a dude from BHS. Think his name was Burris. Balck dude. Funny as hell. He was the guy who "passed out"when they went to take blood (then he winked at me as they had him laying on a gurney) Guys were doing everything imaginable back then to get out of going. I always wondered what happened to that dude. Wonder if he went. There was only a coupla guys that were "Group W" BTW. We were all in socks and undies and one of the "Group W" guys was ...... well......excited? We were all glad he flunked.....haha! posted by

I certainly agree about the expensive items some kids are carrying around. They seem to invite more trouble than they are worth.

I'll be watching with interest keeping in mind the words of one TV executive to me: "If we told the truth about this we would be eaten alive."

When you have an open campus you are inviting those non students to come on-board and commit crimes such as stealing IPODS and phones.
BHS's troubles are numerable. Racial-wealthy vs poor-and teachers who quite frankly don't care to be there anymore. It may be best to abandon this school and build another in a safer environment. The buildings are old, the athletic fields are inadequate and the property could be sold for a high dollar amount that would be enough to offset the building of a new facility. Hi, I am the student who wrote the article in the BHS Blue and White that has come under question, and I would postulate, and I believe correctly so, that you missed the entire point of the article as well as what you were supposed to be "blogging" about. You completely failed to adress the actual issue under question: the crime at BHS. You list an excellent point about the ethnic issues at BHS and the general moral degradation prevalent on high school campuses everywhere, but is it really the fault of the parents? And how is that actually significant. It does not matter whose fault it is, it only matters that it is indeed a reality, a bitter, harsh, and horribly unfortunate one, but mindless idealism will not solve the problem. No, there are a number of potential solutions to the actual problems, but those were not even mentioned. Rather, the focus was on WHY the students even had the items in the first place. Yes, it could be considered unfortunate that "kids" are given expensive things by their parents, but does that necessarily teach them that they have the right to steal those things, and does that honestly CAUSE the problems our nations youth are faced with. I, in my severely finite wisdom, can answer that for you with a resounding NO! I am personally insulted by this assertion, I am what you could consider "middle class," my parents have provided me with a car, a cell phone, funding in my athletic endeavors, and have given me essentially everything that I need. And yet I have developed into a self-reliant individual. I simply must say that I fail to understand why you believe that the provisions that our parents give to us cause us to become mindless swarms of careless teens, because I can honestly tell you that that is not the issue at hand. Perhaps the thieves are indeed being affected by their parents lack of ethical teaching, but don't insult the students who are having their things stolen, it is not their fault, and the problem is real and it won't go away by just telling parents about it or fining them, a fine will do nothing more than cause an increase in student beatings and a much larger group of incarcerated parents. And to all of those who believe that cell phones are not allowed on campus, that is not true, the actual policy is "Cell phones: off and away all day," not "Absolutely no electronics on campus." And both of the students who had their phones stolen in my article had them stolen from their backpacks, and they were off, thus in compliance with the school policy. In conclusion, the issue is no longer who is to blame for this proliferation of thievery, that was the issue seventeen years ago when these young thieves were born, no the issue is now: can we backtrack and teach these students that what they are doing is wrong, and provide the community with truly ethical and conscientious individuals? Thank you, Brandt Champion
