Ugly ship, 5 times bigger than the Titanic sets sail.
The ugly part is my opinion. It looks like a Mississippi steamboat on steroids. So top heavy that I'd think twice before booking a passage. Here's the story. AP - Helsinki It's five times bigger than the Titanic, has seven neighborhoods, an ice rink, a golf course and a 750 seat outdoor amphitheater. The world's largest cruise ship is finally finished and Friday it began gliding toward it's home port in Florida. The Oasis of the seas will meet its first obstacle today when it exits the Baltic Sea and must squeeze under the Great Belt Bridge, which is just 1 foot taller than the ship - even after it's telescopic smokestacks are lowered. To be on the safe side the ship - which rises about 20 stories high- will speed up so that it sinks deep into the water when it passes below the span. Travel guide writer Arthur Frommer has railed against the Oasis which he calls a "floating resort" suggesting that voyages on such huge vessels are a "dumbing down of the cruise experience." Oasis of the Seas is 40% larger than the next biggest ship. It has 2,700 cabins and can accommodate 6,300 passengers and 2,100 crew members. The enormous ship features "neighborhoods" - parks, squares and areas with special themes. One of them will be a tropical environment, including palm trees and vines among the total 12,000 plants on board. In the stern, a 750 seat outdoor theater doubles as a swimming pool by day and an ocean front theater by night. The pool has a diving tower with spring boards and two 33 foot high platforms. And indoor theater seats, 1,300 guests. The liner features 1,600 square foot luxury suites with balconies overlooking the sea of promenades. It also has four swimming pools, volleyball and basketball courts and a youth zone with theme parks and nurseries for children. ![]() 19 comments from 14 users

I've booked passage on a cruise ship. Once. To each his own; a cruise is my last choice of a good time for a vacation. posted by

Never been on a cruise. Never wanted to go on a cruise. Never will go on a cruise (alive). Big ship, little ship, medium ship -- forget about it. Went deep-sea fishing once. Spent most of the time sick. One of my sisters gets sick every time she takes a cruise, but she keeps on taking them. The other one never gets sick, so she loves them. Used to go out in a small outboard motor boat with my dad, fishing. That was fun. Forget the cruise, though. Don't care how many swimming pools they have. posted by

What's the point? The idea of a cruise is to be asea, cruising. If I wanted a rainforest I'd go visit one and I can golf right here. It should be a different experience. I went on a 3 day cruise once and loved it. Much more than that and I'd be bored to tears. 5 days might be ok but not on that behemouth. People will probably do it just to say they did. posted by

3 days is the outside limit of how much pampering I can stand. Then I want to go home to my own bed. No matter, we'd probably be put adrift in a lifeboat when my husband asked a chef if he could have a "fried egg sandwich'. posted by

We did Alaska and will go again. We had a whale breach right at our balcony. The only part I didn't care for was the dressing up for dinner. I think the next time we'll do the freestyle I'm just not a tie person. I am not sure if I'd like days of open ocean but the inside passage of Alaska was awesome and nothing but beautiful. posted by

Imagine how many people would be affected when the Norwalk virus hits that thing? Or how hard it would be to fully disinfect the whole ship.... no thanks, I'll pass. posted by

I AGREE ~ that ship is ugly, and looks too top heavy ... The closest thing to a cruise i have been on is the 'ferry-boat' that takes ya to Catalina Island! LOL & once i was a guest on a Tiger Cruise for a naval Destroyer, i rode that ship from Hawaii to San Diego, it's last cruise before she was mothball'd ~ that was 7 days of INTERESTING ! I always said i would love to go on an Alaskan Cruise, that would be my choice of destinations, but not on that 'new' ship above, no thanks! posted by

Audrey: Off-topic, but did you happen to see the U.S.S. New York, on her way to be commissioned? Parts of the ship were made from materials from the Twin Towers. Now THAT's a ship! Don't you know there'll be celebration when the ship is christened/commissioned? posted by

I hope that monster ship has a nude sunbathing deck somewhere! Clothing optional cruises are becoming very popular. Several cruise lines offer nude cruises to the warmer destinations, although you can take a clothing optional Alaskan cruise. I'll stick with Bora Bora or St Martin myself. posted by

The cruise I want to go on is a real Norwegian cruise of the fjords of Norway--Sognefjord, etc. They are small ships for cruise ships, and they take you from Bergen all the way up to the Arctic Circle. My husband wants to take a Disney cruise of the Bahamas. It's on a Disney cruise ship, and it's all kid-oriented. Our cruise destinations couldn't be more different, so I don't see compromise on that one. Looks like we'll have to take two cruises. Oh, and you're right--that ship is butt-ugly and ruins the whole "cruise" idea, IMO.

Well, pax, that's fine...but you get to clean up all the animal poop. I hope there's a bar on that thing...and if the animals get to go naked, so do I.
