Racist CONservatives looking for great White Hope (McCarthy?)

Rep. Lynn Jenkins says the GOP needs a ‘great white hope’ to thwart President Obama.

At a town hall forum last week, Rep. Lynn Jenkins (R-KS) offered encouragement to conservative activists by saying there were some “really sharp” young Republicans in the House. “Republicans are struggling right now to find the great white hope,” said Jenkins. “I suggest to any of you who are concerned about that, who are Republican, there are some great young Republican minds in Washington.” Jenkins proceeded to name three GOP members of Congress who are all white — Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA), Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI). Watch it:

You brain-numbed lefties are so obsessed - it's funny to watch.  And now, someone uses the time-honored phrase 'the great white hope' to describe anybody and you immediately assume it's a slam on Obama's blackness.  Your are an idiot and a true racist.  Here's an idea:  get a book and learn about things before you react about issues you do not understand.

On second thought, keep it up.  Your foolish rants are a daily reminder of the intolerant, ignorant bigotry of the left-wing and the world needs to see it.

Just like our prez and the nutty professor from Harvard having a problem with the police "stupidly" handling the matter, she likewise is entitled to explain her views that may seem like spin to you. She certainly can be forgiven for exhorting the party to turn to the "bright lights" (regardless of skin color -- Jindal certainly quailfies here, and Alan Keyes is my man) who can lead us away from the black hole the current administration (again regardless of skin color -- Rahm Emanuel comes to mind) is heading toward.

the left is running scared, and grasping at anything they can to debase the right since the secret that they really are the minority voice in america got out.    they dont currently have enough votes to pass squat in the senate, since fat bastard died.

No big deal? Then why did the woman apologize? LOL!!

A Jenkins spokeswoman told the Topeka Capitol-Journal yesterday that “the congresswoman wanted to apologize for her word choice and to emphasize she had no intention of expressing herself in an offensive manner.” “There may be some misunderstanding there when she talked about the great white hope,” said spokeswoman Mary Geiger. “What she meant by it is they have a bright future. They’re bright lights within the party.”

Just a manner of speech.  We do have some great young Republicans, all true Conservatives.  It just happens that the three she mentioned are white.  Nothing wrong with that. I so wish she had not apologized.

The term "The Great White Hope" refers to a time in our history when Jack Johnson became the first black heavyweight boxing champion. A campaign immediately ensued to find a white man to take the title  back, even bringing poor old Jim Jeffries out of retirement to get slaughtered. Interestingly enough, the boxer that finally beat Johnson was a white man from Kansas, Jess Willard, so I guess the young Republican woman was just carrying on a tradition.

Looks like it is a black and white thing. You're right Neverleft, no need to apologize for a racist remark in this day and age.

Wonder if Ted ever saw himself as the "Great White Tub of Goo Hope?"

Pax, how about changing your moniker? You are about as much about the Peace of Christ as Osama bin Laden.

"And now, someone uses the time-honored phrase 'the great white hope' to describe anybody and you immediately assume it's a slam on Obama's blackness."

I guess if you have no clue about the history of this phrase, you wouldn't see the problem. Well, here's the history.

On December 16, 1908, Jack "Galveston Giant" Johnson brutally pummeled Tommy Burns to become boxing's first black World Heavyweight Champion.
Not surprisingly, there was a racial backlash. Johnson's defensive style was called cowardly (even though a previous white boxer that used the same style was called "clever"). He was often depicted as an ape. And whites everywhere -- even liberal ones -- put out the call for a "Great White Hope" that would return the title to the white race, where it "belonged".
Any of that sound familiar?
The drama culminated in the Fight of the Century, July 4, 1910, when the undefeated James Jeffries came out of retirement to try his hand. What drove the man who hadn't fought in six years to get back in shape and take on the champ?

"I am going into this fight for the sole purpose of proving that a white man is better than a Negro".

Except not so much -- Johnson knocked Jeffries down twice, and Jeffries' team called the fight to avoid an embarrassing knockout. The Great White Hope was dashed.

Blacks celebrated. There were spontaneous parades. Many had won big betting on Johnson. Poet William Waring Cuney was even inspired to capture the feeling in his poem "My Lord, What a Morning." Johnson even finally got a little (begrudging) respect from whites -- but some whites were more humiliated than ever. In many cities, the celebrations drew angry reprisal. There were riots. About 23 blacks and 2 whites died in violence across the country.

Howard Sackler, the author of "The Great White Hope", said "it's a metaphor of struggle between man and the outside world."

I'll take the author at his word.  It has nothing at all to do with Obama, but for you on the left EVERY critical comment or disagreement is steeped in racism.  Admit it.

posted by anglo1 on Aug 27, 2009 at 11:02 AM

From the ugliness of the past century to become one of the least racist nations is quite an accomplishment.  Our favorite singers many times are black, our favorite athletes many times are black, we elect a black man  with a dubious background and family history to be our president.  I believe there is only about 15% of the population that is black which tells me we are  far from being a racist nation.  BO's left winged policies are what frightens most of us that are against his agenda, his color means much less to most whites than BO's color means to blacks.

posted by sagefever on Aug 27, 2009 at 11:03 AM

That phrase came out of the 19o8 era~ when did Sackler write his book ? And did Rep.Jenkins reference the book?

So quoting a woman who chose her words poorly you have leapt to the conclusion that conservative is synonymous with racist? LOL. I'm getting more and more encouraged every day. Seven months ago I thought the Republican party was finished... leaderless as it might be I can't help but chuckle at the inept Democrats who control the White house and the Legislature, and have resorted to calling their constituents racist/nazis/brown shirts. This will be their Waterloo.

posted by ProgressivePete2 on Aug 27, 2009 at 11:33 AM

At least she recognized that she shouldn't have said that and apologized. That says a lot. I have less of a problem with someone unintentionally using a term that has really bad connotations and apologizing than I do with people saying "what's the big deal" when it's meaning is pointed out. No, I also don't think that any time someone says something negative about the President that they're automatically racist. It's just when they say something racist that I believe it.

posted by bsc1960 on Aug 27, 2009 at 11:40 AM

This is great. Gotta love these insults. Since I have the ballz to stand up and challenge what Obama wants to shove down our throats, I get called a racist. No evidence to support the accusation, just the fact that I disagree idealogically about our inept government's ability to manage a lemonade stand, much less health care. Keep up the insults lefties, you're showing your true character.

A little off topic but, did you know Jack Johnson lived in Bakersfield?

I agree with Anglo in that we, as a nation, have come a long way.

Unfortunately, it's hard to undo the past and the foundations of our society.

If you read the comments~ only the usual suspects on the right have said things like fat bastard ,etc.

JF~ you kidding me? *edit* That Mr. Johnson lived here?

bsc speaks for all conservatives and is at the heart of why they cannot govern (see Nixon, Reagan, Bush I&II). They don't believe in the ability of the government to improve conditions. Therefore they cannot make it work, and refuse to acknowledge that anyone else can.

He sure did.  He even staged a few of his fights in the ol' town.  He doesn't matter though.

It's kind of hard to put him in the local Black History curriculum since it's usually only a week long and we have to regurgitate the MLK and Harriet Tubman story every year.  Plus I was told on this site, that the average White guy doesn't care about Black history.  Apparently, American history and Black history  never cross paths.

From the very earliest rejection of overspending by Obama and the Congress, the "Tea Parties", the Americans who chose to assemble and speak out were immediately slandered and denigrated by the left as racist, anti-poor and ignorant.  Then when Americans chose to protest Obama's plan for a federal takeover of the health care industry the slanders and attacks got worse.  Racist, KKK, swastikas, mob, astroturf, anti-black, anti-civil rights, white supremacists - these are just a few of the terms uttered by "progressives" like Nancy Pelosi, Bill Maher and Janeane Garafalo.

Just sayin'.

I think what most of us (me for sure) got upset about was the right ignoring the will of the people, the majority that elected the President and want him to succeed. I don't remember calling you names. It is fine to disagree but you people seem to want to overturn the election results. It just isn't going to work this time.

posted by NancyII on Aug 27, 2009 at 02:02 PM

Riiight, our concern about the trillions of borrowing and spending dollars, the health care that no one can figure out or approve of or pay for, the debt our grandkids will have to pay is all because Obama is Black.  Yeah..that's it.

Where's that rolling eyes emotican?

posted by ProgressivePete2 on Aug 27, 2009 at 02:13 PM

very correct pikebishop. The voters chose Obama and one of the main reasons was that he wanted to reform healthcare. Conservatives can pretend that a majority of Americans don't want healthcare reform, but it's just not true.

posted by pikebishop on Aug 27, 2009 at 02:17 PM

What was he supposed to do Nancy? Leave the economy where W. and his war and tax cuts for the rich had left it. Paulson started the bailouts with no oversight. And surprise, girlie, the people want health care reform and we are going to get it this time. And I never mentioned racism.

And what is preventing Nancy and Harry from rubber stamping the SEIU/Acorn  healthcare bill and putting it on the Presidents desk???  They have majorities in the House and Senate....So what is stopping them??

posted by pikebishop on Aug 27, 2009 at 02:20 PM

Maybe, just maybe, they are trying to construct a bill that everyone can live with, not like say, the Patriot Act. And, for once, get off the buzz word crap like ACORN and SEIU, try to have an original thought without consulting your Limbaugh/Hannity/Savage/Beck thesaurus

posted by ronmexico on Aug 27, 2009 at 02:22 PM

And we also get this, courtesy of Harry, Nancy and Barry.  And this is even outdated. The red is projected to get even deeper.  But it is all Bushs fault.  His deficits weren't big enough, so Barry is going to make them bigger.

Wow. You need to brush up on your history.  If only the USS Ted Kennedy Healthcare bill could get as many votes as the Patriot Act.

The Patriot Act passed the House on October 24, 2001 with 357 Yeas and 66 Nays.  The Act Passed the Senate with 98 Yeas and 1 Nay.

But yeah, 8 months into the administration how many trillions of debt are we in already with no reform really in sight?  Cash for clunkers a dismal disappointment at least for dealers who hafen't been paid) and on and on.  What was he supposed to do?  Listening, planning, working..instead of throwing trillions of Chinas dollars around like a drunken sailor. (no offense to the Navy.)  ARE we better off 8 months later?

What conservative blogs would that be Pike?  This is the only blog I post on or read unless you count a couple of the ebay posting boards.  And THIS is FAR from being a conservative blog.

Any image will do Nancy and some best left unsaid. As you know, it takes time for money to filter down, plus the thing was so successful that govt. got behind (where have I heard that before). Learnem, I guess I missed the part about the majority of the people voting for McCain, thanks for educating me. There I go with that damned liberal bias again. I will direct you to fivethirtyeight.com also. There is some good statistical stuff there. Might even make you re-evaluate some of your positions.
