Fox news is reporting that his death was an apparent overdose possibly sleeping pills. They keep throwing the word suicide around. Only 28 what a drag. posted by

I agree, most likely a combination of prescribed, OTC and maybe even a little alcohol. We should form our own long distance CSI team. posted by

We should care, OldBlue, because it's going to drive less-important news (the Stock Market, Iraq, politics, global warming) off the TV "news" shows for days. posted by

RF is correct on that one! There's a hell of a lot more important news going on right now than the "gay cowboy" from Broke Back Mountain OD'ing on prescription meds. But this will consume the cable news networks (Fox included) for days while the world economy is in turmoil. But Blue is right that in and of itself it is a pfffffffffft! posted by

I never saw Brokeback Mountain due to lack of interest in the subject matter, but I really liked him in other movies, particularly A Knight's Tale, one of my favorites. This one I find sad. I heard that he had battled severe depression since his marriage broke up. posted by

An old cowboy sat down at the bar and ordered a drink. As he sat sipping his drink, a young woman sat down next to him. She turned to the cowboy and asked, "Are you a real cowboy?" He replied, "Well, I've spent my whole life, breaking colts, working cows, going to rodeos, fixing fences, pulling calves, bailing hay, doctoring calves, cleaning my barn, fixing flats, working on tractors, and feeding my dogs, so I guess I am a cowboy." She said, "I'm a lesbian. I spend my whole day thinking about women. As soon as I get up in the morning, I think about women. When I shower, I think about women. When I watch TV, I think about women. I even think about women when I eat. It seems that everything makes me think of women." The two sat sipping in silence. A little while later, a man sat down on the other side of the old cowboy and asked, "Are you a real cowboy?" He replied, "I always thought I was, but I just found out I'm a lesbian." posted by

Brokeback Mountain was difficult to watch because of the subject matter. HOWEVER, it did open my eyes to the problems that gay men encountered in 1950 and today. I guess that's what good writing and acting does. Heath Ledger was a good actor and I've seen most of his movies. Even that (Mel Gibson) piece of crap "Patriots". I wonder how this will affect the ticket sales of Batman? posted by

Ticket sales of Batman movie will be greatly enhanced. For a whole day all you've heard is how "over the top" he was as Joker. Even an interview with Nicholson. I don't care for the Batman movies myself, but even I am interested in seeing his performance in it. posted by

I watched Monsters Ball again last night, the only movie I own with Ledger in it~he did a creditable job as the suicidal son of Billy Bob's character, part of the family triangle including Peter Boyle as the patriarch. The way to early speculation as to the cause of his death should give us all pause~so eager to add another name to death by drugs. However he passed, the film world has lost a good actor and a daughter her father. posted by

It was overly sentimental, like most of Gibson's films. "Patriot" put so much emphasis on silly romances and "father knows best" subplots that it interferred with the real drama of the Revolutionary war. Nevertheless, my brother and most men loooooooved it. posted by

As a big fan of CSI and other TV forensic stuff, and an admitted conspiracy freak, I can't understand why the NYPD is not pursuing the Olsen Twin connection to this story? Why was she called instead of 911? Why did she send her personal security team to the apartment instead of calling 911? Did her security guys take anything from the crime scene and leave with it? I haven't heard if they were there when the police arrived. If not, they should be charged with leaving the scene of a crime or accident or something? The rolled up $20 bill had no trace of drugs on it. Did Olsen's men take away her $20? Was she at the scene earlier? There are a million unanswered questions to me. posted by

ArmchairD, do you really labor under the misapprehension that CSI is anything like real life in LE? Just wondering. If you do it might explain the conspiracy freak part I guess. posted by

Marlon Brando's troubled son died too. Where are the headlines? Where is the hoopla? Whether this Heath would have gone on to be famous on his own merits or not is something we'll never know. Sort of like James Dean or River Phoenix. Suzanne Pleshette died too and hardly a mention here...because she'd run her race so to speak? Or it wasn't sensational enough even though she was outstanding? She said she was never a star...and that was why she was still working. Ned Beatty? One of the finest character actors around so I don't see the Ned Beatty syndrome thing here. Like Suzanne..he was never really a star in spite of Deleverance, but he never sopped working. My hat goes off to those who help make the "star" look good. posted by

I'm curious. In the overall grand scheme of things exactly what impact does his death have in this world?
Is his death any more significant than say anyone else in today's Obit page?
I don't think so. Ten years from now, (other than family mambers and a small cult of fans) no one will have a clue who Heath Ledger was and the world will have changed little for his life or death.
Again I am left to wonder what's the big deal and why anyone should give a rat's hiney?
This is another example of "much ado about nothing". posted by

But Curt..whatever would people have to gossip about if not the Anna Nicoles, the Paris Hiltons, the Brittany Spears and all the other troubled celibrities? :-) I think people have a desire to be a part of La Vita Loca even if it is vicariously. Personally, I find it mildly, briefly, interesting but I'm studying to get my Real Estate License back and that's a lot more important. Now..back to the grindstone. p.s....Go see "The Bucket List" if you want a good movie with a real message. And it's funny too. posted by

Why do we tell stories? Why read novels? Why watch films? It is some vicarious thrill or something deeper? I recently did a blog on Norse Mythology~ a group of "stories" all about their equivalent of stardom, rolled up $20 bills and untimely deaths. As a culture they used these tales to see themselves, record history and ultimately used the Eddas to study their societies structure, identify a critical flaw and change it.Not just with Erick the Reds death...but the whole history. (great bit about finding American, the first European baby born here by the way).To my mind some read the Enquirer~others see more, perhaps beyond a signal persons death. In the grand scheme of thing none of us matter one wit. But when I told my story here on b.com,of my personal losses,I heard back from more than one who had learned something from my tale. That is the most we can hope for. As I stated ,I am not so callous as to not give pause for all who have passed. I hear the "Bucket List" is a 50/50 ,so I am waiting for the DVD~though Freeman and Nicholson are good actors. posted by

Chico, you mean CSI is NOT like real life? Aren't all detectives hot chicks who run around in tank tops with a flack vest over them? Jeeez, now I'm disapointed, I'll have to call off my trip to Las Vegas just to see the cops. Our readers recommend: |
