BdotCOM - > BdotCOM -> Couple tweaks to our design coming overnight
Couple tweaks to our design coming overnight

As I write this, we’re a few hours from going live with a new content-management system to publish staff news stories. The improvements for now are mostly under the hood, and we purposely tried to keep visible changes to a minimum  but we’ll be rolling out some very cool bells and whistles in the coming months.

For now, the most prominent changes you’ll notice will be some tweaks to the yellow navigation tabs near the top of most of our pages:

  • The “Today’s Paper” tab has been replaced with “News,” which reflects the fact that much of the news content on bakersfield.com is not in the newspaper (and vice versa). We’ve also shuffled the order of the sublinks that appear when you mouse over the “News” tab they're now prioritized by popularity.
  • The “Opinion” tab has been eliminated; the Opinion section link can now be found under the “News” tab. The Opinion tab simply got very little use so we collapsed the number of tabs.
  • We added and deleted some of the subsection links underneath the tabs. Some links were added to reflect popular sections while others simply weren’t popular enough to warrant a homepage link. And we realize some of those tabs had so many links underneath them it was hard to navigate from one end to the other to click on the section you wanted.

With any major software installation, there are bound to be bugs. We’re sure you’ll find some yourself, so come Tuesday when we're live with the new system, take a look around and see if you see anything amiss. Let us know if you do.

These changes are minor compared with some major changes coming to bakersfield.com and our other local sites this year. I’ll share more on those improvements as we get closer but rest assured we have a very busy year ahead.

Thanks,

Logan Molen

It's tweaked alright... the home page has some serious "alignment" problems.

posted by BdotCOM on Mar 31, 2009 at 08:01 AM

gsisola,

What browser and operating system are you using? Do you have a screen grab you can share? Any detail would be most appreciated in helping us isolate the issue.

Thanks.

Where is the funeral section?

It was changed before and was a hassel. Now I can't find it at all.

posted by BdotCOM on Mar 31, 2009 at 08:20 AM

The Obituaries link is still under the same tab, now called News. We also have an Obits link in the ShortCuts section of the homepage.

And here's the direct link to the Funeral Services produced by the Californian newsroom.

Im using IE 7, also when you insert the image, the preview description is in another language.

The link to funerals is broken.  Easy to find..just isn't working.

posted by witterpitters on Mar 31, 2009 at 08:23 AM

"Funerals" section has a sign that says "oops this link is broken"

The pages are off center and bleed over into one another :-(

posted by NancyII on Mar 31, 2009 at 08:24 AM

My pages are ok on AOL.  I haven't checked them on the laptop where I use IE and Firefox though.

edited/...I just realized while they don't bleed over, I have to scroll to see the entire page.  Waaaaaay too wide.

I had a very quick look around, and in Firefox, Win XP, the site looks great.  I really like the new format of the pages, I never really visited the paper side of TBC site very much in the past, and don't remember it having links and digests to so many stories.  Excellent visually!

The funerals section is the only problem I saw, looked like the top navigation section, was reading the css, no nav buttons etc.  In fact it looks just like this:

Witters and I got the same page with the broken link.

But, thanks :0) the direct link you posted here works fine.

Yeah, the page width on the blogs is off kilter with the background image.  the text scrolls off the white background and into the grey right margin

posted by BdotCOM on Mar 31, 2009 at 08:39 AM

Thanks to all for the great detail. We'll work to fix everything you've identified asap.

The page width on the blog pages looked fine until a few minutes ago. For some reason, the screen shot overpowered the code on that template.

Looks like we're playing a game of hedgehog this morning! But with your help, we'll isolate the issues and settle into a groove.

I think the one picture Turkeysandwich posted says it all..the banner above looks like the same artist that did the signs for the Valley Plaza....I hope they didnt pay too much for those..

The blog's width via Firefox/XP

posted by Justinian on Mar 31, 2009 at 08:48 AM

Hey Montfred,

Try a shift-refresh. That should take care of the blog width issue.

Thanks,

Justinian

Is anyone else having trouble with the blog loading slooooooow?  It's happening on both my computers so I know it's not that.  It has to be either my connection or TBC.   The only place I have it is on TBC though..all the rest of my web sites load normally.

Could it be the blogs are trying to tell me something?  I haven't been on as much because I can't just sit here waiting for it to load.

Every thing seems fine now. Even seems to load faster~ using Firefox.

[edit.] in IE v8.

posted by BdotCOM on Mar 31, 2009 at 12:31 PM

Um, Roysan, can you be more specific beyond the acronomic feedback? If you can share details, we can isolate any problems that might be specific to IE8.

Thanks.

posted by montfred on Mar 31, 2009 at 12:35 PM

[edit.] you really don't want to know.  I'll fire up IE and take a look around.

I'm aware of what [edited] means. Use the term myself here and there. Just wanted to know the degree, in this case. ;)

In the meantime, we'll fire up IE8 and do some troubleshooting.

And thanks for the XP/IE7 screengrab.

posted by robinislost on Mar 31, 2009 at 02:13 PM

Are the problems fixed? I slept in for a hours and didn't try it this morning, but I just got on and don't see any problems. I'm using Mac and Safari, but I don't know which system and which version. I know it's one of the newer ones, but probably not the newest.

I haven't touched my XP in a few days, but I could get on there and see if it looks screwed up.

posted by sagefever on Mar 31, 2009 at 02:21 PM

Looks fine in Google Chrome also.

posted by Shwaine on Mar 31, 2009 at 02:36 PM

While the updates were going on last night, it was all sorts of fun, hehe. The only difference I notice now is that the home page has a slightly larger font for the "headline" story under "Latest News" and "Featured Coverage" than it used to. Also, the poll at the bottom has three option radial buttons to click but the first option has no text next to it. This is on Firefox, various version numbers, on both Windows and Linux.

posted by gsisola on Mar 31, 2009 at 02:47 PM

The home page is still way off of the white margin on the left. It's like the white page is in the middle but the content has no margin and is way off to the left edge of the screen in the gray area. I am using IE8 and Vista... now if I take the view from 100% to say 150% it helps but all it is doing is making the white fill the screen so that there is no more gray background... if I knew how to capture the screen and paste it I would. The blogs look fine.

Shwaine, when in doubt, answer C. At least that was the advice for when taking state tests years ago. Seriously, not sure what's up with that bug with the poll, but we'll nail it down. Thanks for the tip.

Gisola, we're still tracing IE8 issues. You're ahead of the curve with that brand-new version (IE8 accounts for only 368 visits to the site so far today) so you may see a few rough edges for a bit. But keep sharing what you run across.

And thanks to everyone else for being patient, sharing their feedback and checking with all kinds of browsers and operating systems.

posted by BdotCOM on Mar 31, 2009 at 03:17 PM

Couple things:

1) The poll is fixed. Let us know if you see any other issues.

2) Jason pointed out that I violated our own Terms of Use by earlier repeating an acronym that refers to some nasty language. My apologies. I've since edited my post. And kudos to Jason stepping up and keeping me in line. I should be making his job easier, not harder. Having said that, PLEASE do not derail this thread with a discussion about acceptable acronyms. We need your more immediate help making the site look and work better. ;-)

Is it only Windows computers that are not working with the new tweaks? I just opened Bakersfield.com in Firefox on the Mac and I don't seem to have any problems with it still.

The only thing I noticed is that on the People homepage, the pictures that say "New comments," "New blog posts," etc., next to the "Getting started:" are missing, but the links are still there. I normally click on those when I reopen B.com to get the homepage, blog posts and comments tabs.

Funerals are now gone from the obit page.  Any idea where they went?

posted by jasonsperber on Apr 1, 2009 at 09:49 AM

Newsroom funeral listings are here: http://www.bakersfield.com/...

The link is in the site map at the bottom of news pages.

posted by BdotCOM on Apr 1, 2009 at 10:27 AM

Nancy,

We're working to restore that Funerals link on the Obits page. We have to work through a third-party vendor to get that done, so it'll take a bit of time.

In the meantime, the link and routes Jason shared will get you there.
