"Bargain Betty" blog launches; shoppers dance in streets
Knowing that people in Bakersfield love to shop and can't pass up a great bargain, we've launched a new staff blog called Bargain Betty. "Betty" lives to bring you the best deals in Bakersfield. As Betty's profile reads: "Even though the name is "Bargain Betty," we're a team of savvy shoppers and employees at The Bakersfield Californian offering you tips on how to shop smart and save locally. "We'll be highlighting unique products and good buys in our Classifieds as well as sales, deals and discounts we hear about around town. "Please send us your tips!" Blog posts so far have been varied, ranging from yard sales and muscle cars to purses and Bengal kittens. The Bargain Betty blog will augment our other great consumer and shopping features, including the Cheapskate blog on bakersfield.com, and the BakoDeals and BakoBiz feeds on Twitter. Please share your ideas, tips and great deals with us. The wider the conversation, the better the deals and shopping experiences. 6 comments from 4 users

I've been spending a little more at the 99-cent store. I shop there before going to chain food stores and keep an eye out for canned goods and dry goods. I can be confident that the price hasn't been jacked up, as happens almost every time I go to FoodMaxx or FoodCo. 99-cent store is consistent; it's cheap; it lets me stock up so I have more to donate for food drives. posted by

I am a big believer in using coupons. Before I head out to the stores I always check online for coupons. Here are some of my favorite sites. http://www.redplum.com/ http://print.coupons.com/co... http://www.bettycrocker.com... I know some folks hate the thought of letting yet another company have their data. But I have gotten some very nice coupons by joining rewards programs online. Longs Drugs is now part of the CVS chain and they have a rewards program that will email coupons to you. https://www.cvs.com/CVSApp/user/extracare/extraca re.jsp Plus you get money back for the items that you buy there. OfficeMAX and Staples both have rewards programs. https://www.officemaxperks.com/SSOEnrollmentForm. aspx and http://www.staplesrewardsce... One discount that could save you up to $500.00 is available at Lowes. Apply online and they will send you a single use 10% off coupon via email that you can print. http://www.lowes.com/lowes/... Other hardware chains that have deals are Ace (that would be Floyd's) https://www.acehardware.com/acerewards/index.jsp? step=aceRewardsHub and TrueValue. http://truevalue.com/conten... Other stores that I always use a coupon at are Bed, Bath and Beyond, http://app.bedbathandbeyond... Barnes and Noble, http://www.barnesandnoble.c... and Pep Boys. http://localstores.pepboys.... This comment could go on forever. I think you get the idea. Go online before you shop and look for a coupon. The more money that you save the more money you have to give to charities or to save for something special. posted by

Oh I forgot to mention.... Pricetrader.com. I was able to get my car smogged for half price with a coupon from http://pricetrader.com/ The business that performed this discounted smog check was who I usually use when I have smog checks required. Such a deal. Coupons old school style are available in the phone book. Check it out. Federico College has a coupon for 50% off of many services for first time customers. The coupon on page 221 of the Valley Yellow Pages states "may be used for several services and for your entire family". Phone book coupons for Pizza start on page 231 they include Magoos, Me-n-Eds, Papa O's, Cataldo's, and Plumberry's. OMG there is a Hungry Hunter Steakhouse Coupon on page 237. It expires on June 30, 2010. I am now hungry after hunting down all of these coupon savings. Where are those scissors, car keys, cell phone? I'm gone. Bye 4 now. posted by

My Dear Ms BargainBetty, I am the Queen of Coupons. It is so against my principles to pay full price for anything. Folks call me when they need a deal. They hate it when after hearing about their wonderful ski trip or beach vacation I tell them about the 2 for 1 lift ticket offers or the free hotel nights I know about. They know better now and call sys_mom before their adventure begins. Hobby? Addiction? No No No.... Lifestyle!!!!
