Cops warn of stolen license plates

The Sheriff's Department is warning folks about recent license plate thefts. Anyone out there actually had their plates or tags stolen? I always thought the "people will steal your registration tags" was an old wives tale.

Nice thing is you can get special screws for your plates for free that will apparently vex any would be thieves.

Date:     Tuesday, February 26, 2008
Time:     8:50:01 AM
Department contact: Ray Pruitt, Crime Prevention Coordinator

Details:The Kern County Sheriff's Office reminds vehicle owners to secure their license plates to avoid theft.

The theft of license plates in Kern County, as in other areas of California, has become common place. Most
license plates are stolen so that the registration tabs can be removed from the license plate and either used
by the suspect or sold. It is much easier for the criminal to remove the license plate, take it to a safe location,
and then remove the license plate tab instead of attempting to remove the tab while the license plate is still
on the vehicle.

In response to this criminal activity, the Kern County Sheriff's Office Crime Prevention Unit began offering
license plate security screw kits free of charge in early 2007. The security screws can be used to
permanently attach a license plate to a vehicle, making it much more difficult to remove. As a result, the
number of reported license plate thefts in the unincorporated area of metropolitan Bakersfield dropped from
507 during 2006 to 446 during 2007.

Recently, the Kern County Sheriff's Office Detective Division and Crime Analysis Unit noticed a slight
increase in the number of reported license plate thefts in the Bakersfield area. Due to this increase, the Kern
County Sheriff's Office would like to remind the public that the security screw kits are available, and
encourage the public to take advantage of this crime prevention program. These kits can be obtained at the
Sheriff's Office Headquarters Facility, 1350 Norris Rd., Bakersfield, at the Crime Reports desk, or by calling
the Crime Prevention Unit at 661-391-7559.

If you would like further information on this topic, or are interested in other crime prevention topics, please
contact the Kern County Sheriff's Office Crime Prevention Unit at 661-391-7559.

I've seen more and more plateless cars these days...

Grandsons plates were stolen recently.  And a co worker in Wasco had hers stolen also.  Both were off pickups if that means anything.  I'm told the plates are used on vehicles that can't get registration for one reason or another.  Stolen, won't smog,  no money, etc.

ANTI THEFT TIP:  After you place the registeration sticker on the license plate, get a razor or sharp knife and slice up the registration sticker.  Once the sticker is sliced up, its harder to peel off the license plate.

I always cut mine.  Problem is, they may want the entire plate tags and all.  Gosh..don't you guys watch cops and robber shows?

We've had two plates stolen from our cars, one in northeast Bakersfield at an apartment complex and one in Seven Oaks.

The police give you these screws which are very hard to get off, which makes them an anti-theft device.

BTW, how much does DMV charge you for replacement Tags and Plates?

We had a sticker theft last year, but....it was so pathetic that we couldn't press charges.  Essentially, I went out and put the new sticker on my husband's car - it was about 1pm.  At 3pm, we walked out to his car to go somewhere and I noticed that the registration sticker was the OLD sticker.  I thought maybe I hadn't stuck it on well enough and that it'd blown off or whatever.  But, there was no sign of it on the ground.  Hubby was on his way inside to call the DMV when I happened to look at the neighbor's car across the street.  The kid had been driving with expired tags for several months...but, low and behold, he had a new registration sticker.  I walked up to the door with the paperwork I'd received in the mail that day and said to his mom, "Do you have anything like this in your mailbox today?"  She said, "No! Not from the DMV. Why?"  I said, "Well...your son has new tags on his car and coincidentally...I received mine in the mail today; put them on my car; and they're gone.  She caught my drft and started yelling for her son.  My stickers were back in five minutes.

Steve, ours were not stolen at 7 Oaks.  They were stolen in the parking garage across the street from your work. Remember you borrowed Lori's car for one day and someone stole the plates.  We got new plates and locking screws.

Steve, your wife has set you straight. Can you say, "you are right dear."

You're right dear.

Though it's a better story if they get stolen from Seven Oaks, not in my crime infested workplace area.

And I don't remember how much it cost to replace the things.
