First photo of wounded officer released

The Bakersfield police have released a photo of Officer Dennis Eddy receiving a donation to a fund set up to help him and his family deal with his injuries.

Eddy had part of his leg amputated last week, after being wounded in a shoot out with a gang member earlier this month.

The donation was from the Choir Boys Motorcycle Club, a group of active and retired law enforcement officers who are dedicated to the support of families of law enforcement officers who are injured or killed in the line of duty.

There but for the grace of God goes any one of us - but it won't be one of us because Officer Eddy took the bullet for us.

Thank you so much Office Eddy. You put your life on the line for us everyday. I hope that you get all the best treatment you need, and I hope you have a fast recovery. Once again thank you so much. God bless you.

In the days following the shootings there was a rash of unbelievably ignorant postings insinuating that the BPD had somehow decided to shoot their fellow officer to bolster their case.  Do people actually believe this?  It's never good when someone loses their life when it could have been avoided, but it was the fleeing felon's own acts that got him killed.  It could have been avoided, but not by the police.

I would like to thank the BPD and in particular Officer Eddy for their service to the community.  Thank God there are men and women out there with the willingness to take on such a difficult and sometimes thankless job.  Be safe.

It seems that some times people take for granted our 1st rate police department.  It also seems that we are not grateful. I argue that this can not be farther from the truth.

Officer Eddy, to be hated for your uniform instead of your character bothers us all.  I know that God has been overwhelmed at prayers for you.  It is time for all of us to tell these heroic people how well we sleep at night with the security that the BPD affords us.

Thank you so much Officer Eddy and your family for your dedication and your sacrafice. Thank you to the BPD for your training that kept these officers involved in this incident alive. We give thanks to you and we are grateful.

Thank you Officer Eddy for not only the sacrifice you made for us on the evening of February 9th, but also the protection you and the other officers of the BPD give us every day!  I am proud to have such a high-caliber group of individuals out there for our community.  God Bless and heal quickly!!  10-8 baby!!!!!!!!!! :0)

I'll add my thanks, especially since the police are asked to do an impossible job in the face of impossible odds against them. It only makes the situation worse when even our paper TBC editorializes against them and makes them look like the bad guys while allowing the glorification of criminals.

Hey samheath, what on earth are you talking about? TBC "editorializing against" law enforcement? It's absurd and irresponsible to make claims like that.

freesafety, it may be technically true that TBC is not dumb enough to come right out and write an editorial against law enforcement. However, the manner in which things are reported (or ignored) and presented does show a definite slant. Consider:

  • "Officers Slay Parolee"- yes, there was yet another of Jenner's trite aplogies. So what? Misleading headlines happen all the time in this paper. Either Jenner has no control over his own editors, or he likes headlines like that.
  • Endless interviews with "community members" with obvious bias, none of whom were subjected to the critical questions a public official or business person would have received: "He was trying to clean up his life."- Then why was he back in the same place, with the same people? "Father of three"- By how many women and did he support any of those children? Even such drivel as "He bought ice cream for the kids"- What kind of job did he have where he got the money to be so generous? Every other "man dies" story in this paper mentions a person's livelihood, yet not once did I see a reference to the gang member's occupation, if he had one.
  • I believe even the photograph used of this individual was manipulated. I seem to recall the photo presented by the family and seen on TV showed a man posing to display his tattoos. The Californian repeatedly printed the same photo, but cropped to avoid showing the arms. The cropping of the photo is typical of what TBC does with information in general, and it is consistently indicative of bias.

My curiosity is piqued, though, by some of Steve Swenson's comments on blogs and elsewhere. He clearly is a quick and able reporter, and does ask some of these questions, yet the information rarely appears in the initial articles. So, does the reporter get edited to reach the conclusion the editor wants to see?
