If you were arrested, would you talk to a reporter?
As I was on my way to talk to Justin Ennis in the downtown jail Saturday about the murder charge he is in for, the correctional officer who escorted me said, "I can't believe this guy is talking to you people (news media)." Ennis proceeded to tell me how he was framed for the Thursday night killing of Lora Shine in south Bakersfield. The story ended with how he would like to get some legal help so he didn't incriminate himself. What with finding her dead, taking some time to smoke marijuana and share a margarita so they could figure out a way that no one would get in trouble, how he tied her up this time because she attacked him but all the other times it was the older guy who tied her up, and how he was going to call the cops but never quite got around to it. Do you think Ennis helped himself out with the interview? If you were in jail on a charge, would you talk to a reporter? Posted by Steve E. Swenson 31 comments from 13 users

No, I wouldn't talk to any reporters. Seems to make things worse. Wait to get an attorney and I'm sure the attorneys advice would be to shut up. posted by

First off, these guys had already confessed to the police before they were booked into jail, so it wasn't like it was the first time they had told their story. I saw them interviewed on the TV news the other night and they both seemed semi-mentally retarded. And catpaw, you took the words right out of my mouth with the first comment... posted by

I wouldn't talk to anyone, about anything. My question is why request the interview? You must have known dude did not have an attorney/legal advice and nothing in the story would help him. Don't get me wrong, he and any other defendant, are stupid to talk to the press, but it's almost like ambulance chasing to go down to the jail and interviewing these guys who don't know any better than to talk to you. Part of the prosecutors job is done by you. *You being the media...it's never personal :) posted by

I kinda think it is wrong for the media to question a murder suspect.....especially a "slow murder suspect" The media should have to read you your rights also....after all they are acting like cops/prosecutors......

You know I have figured something out. If you don't talk to the cops or reporters more than likely you will walk. I watch the show First 48. The majority of all of their crimes are solved by people tattling on themselves and each other. If and when they file charges on the other dumb Peterson his media appearances will be the nails in his coffin. posted by

My question is why request the interview? Well, its kinda like Obama thinking he so damn eloequent and smart he could tell all the red necks in fly-over country that they only "cling" to God and Guns when they're hurtin (or PO'd at Bushco). Some people figger they can charm the pants off'n anyone. Sometimes they are left with no pants. posted by

My view is tilted because I'm a reporter, but here it is. If I were arrested, yes, I'd talk to the press, because I'm not a criminal. If I were arrested, the police would announce their version of what happened and why I was in jail, and I would not want the people who put me in jail being the only ones speaking about why I was there. posted by

Being slow is going to work in their favor at this point. OB I love that show. Someone is making money over youngsters dying over b/s....only in America. It does kind of remind me of the hood. I love the name of the housing projects in Miami..."pork "n" bean projects" posted by

James, what you say makes sense on paper, but wouldn't you rather have the public think you are a criminal, but remain silent and give your attorney a chance to mount a defense? For example, if Vincent Brothers would have talked to the police or the media, his crack attorneys would not have been able to put him on the stand and let him lie about being the driver of the car involved in the accident back east. Besides, whoever was covering the court beat for TBC would surely portray you in a positive light in any articles they wrote. I have never seen TBC write an article slanted to mislead the readers, so why start with you? posted by

How'd Obama end up in this post? Only those with an agenda pretend they don't know what he was saying. citybeat, I'm not a criminal either, but that doesn't mean that I'll never end up in a jail cell. If I were ever accused, the next to last person I'd speak to is someone from the media. There is no upside to telling a reporter anything. It's best to talk in court, so nothing is taken out of context or used against me. posted by

If I committed a crime I would never talk about it to ANYONE, ever! I would never talk to the police, to the media, my family or my friends. I wouldn't even tell my attorney anything except the bare bones of my alibi and defense. I've seen The First 48 too, Timec. How those detectives get those idiots to confess time and time again is beyond me. Even if I were falsely accused, I wouldn't talk. But then, idiots who confess save court time and taxpayer money.
