The oldest profession in Bakersfield

I spent part of a day last week driving around with officers from the vice unit as they busted prostitutes working along Union Avenue and V Street.

Four prostitutes were arrested in about an hour, and several others were seen working the streets.

"Pretty Woman" it's not. Most of these girls are drug addicts and some are homeless or spend their time going from one dingy motel to the next night after night. One of the prostitutes said she started using drugs at 12 and began selling her body at 14.

There was a lot of activity. And it was only 10 in the morning.

I'm working on a complete story that should run within a week.

Sad! But as long as there are "Johns" they will be out there.  The police need to start concentrating on the customers.  Put their names in the paper and jail them for six months.

Prostitution should not be glamorized, minimized or sanitized. It is not a "victimless" crime. (Contrary to misconception, street prostitution is NOT legal in Nevada, licensed brothels are.)

Agree with Roy. It takes two. The customer should be arrested and charged. Put their names in the paper; drunk drivers get published.

This is a good argument why prostitution should be legalized and regulated.

When one participates in an illegal activity that person is also breaking the law.  What happend to the days when they DID publish the johns name?

As for legallization.  As is the case with all illegal activities when we, as a society, loosen our morals we just legalize the activity.  It's a lot easier than doing the right thing.

There is no such thing as a victimless crime.  EVERY crime affects someone is some way.

I was wondering where all the hookers went.  I used to see them on Union all the time.

What a scoop for the Californian's Ace reporter, there are whores on the streets of Bakersfield!

And here we all thought that the land of "life as it should be" had only churches and  god fearing men and women.

Next there will be a cry for a "Two whore task force units" County and City, and of course it will happen.

Why are you wasting your time working on a complete story? ..........I think this story has been told over and over again..........always with the same ending...John picks up hooker......john pays hooker........john screws hooker........end of story.

Panfilio, I would think you would like the vice unit arresting street hookers, since a lot of them live in the apartments just down the street from you. However, your property value is pretty much in the gutter anyways, so it really doesn't matter.

Having read a draft of the story, I can tell you it's a lot more than "there are prostitutes in Bakersfield." Jason has a compelling story here.

Another award winning investigative story no doubt. I look forward to reading it and commenting as is appropriate.  Did he interview former Kern County CAO Scott Jones regarding this subject too?

And I thought only the KBAK TV reporters had the experience and fortitude to tackle the difficult stories that no one else was willing to do. That's what their commercials say that play every 10 minutes.

Yech.  This story isn't going to be "pretty."  If I read it, it will probably put me on a bummer all day.  Thanks for the warning.

The California used to put the pictures of the john's in every Sunday paper.

So, nothing new, lol.

posted by NancyII on Apr 29, 2008 at 09:39 PM

I never saw the pictures, just the names but when I was in Tehachapi a guy got caught and sid he was on Union looking for a for a used pickup.  I guess he found one.

Of course, the criticism of printing names and pics of drunk drivers and johns was it could be arbitrary (relative of a major advertiser would be withheld) and guilt by association was implied before the person appeared in court.

I thought the oldest profession in Bakersfield was serving breakfast to the over 70 crowd at the Westchester Bowl.
