Murder suspect escapes from Sherrif's at KMC, captured after chase through East Bakersfield
Location: 1900 Flower St. , Bakersfield, CA

Synopsis: Homicide Suspect caught by bike patrol during escape attempt
Details: This is a news release of the Kern County Sheriff's Department.
Please do not contact the Sheriff's Communications Center.

Date:     Friday, May 16, 2008
Time:     8:58:58 AM

Details:

on 5-16-08, about 7:55 am, homicide suspect ANDREW QUINTON HERNANDEZ escaped from custody. HERNANDEZ was being transported to Kern Medical Center for a blood draw.  HERNANDEZ' charges made him a high risk inmate and he was transported to KMC by two deputies (Detention Deputy GERMAN and Deputy CASTANEDA).  HERNANDEZ was transported in a transportation van while wearing waist and leg shackles.  HERNANDEZ had a handcuff key he obtained (by unknown means).  HERNANDEZ was able to escape from his leg and waist shackles.  When the deputies opened the rear door of the transportation van, HERNANDEZ pushed past the deputies and fled.  HERNANDEZ ran into the neighborhood south of the hospital.

Detention Deputy GERMAN notified the communitcations center of the situation.  Three (3) bike patrol deputies were in the area (Deputies RYAN SORROW, ALFRED JUAREZ, and ROGER DIXON).  They set up a perimeter based on GERMAN'S information.  Within a very short time  (1 1/2 to 2 minutes), the bike patrol had HERNANDEZ back in custody.

HERNANDEZ had fled to the 1900 block of Quincy Street.  HERNANDEZ had forced entry into an apartment and tried to hide there.  HERNANDEZ refused to comply with deputies' orders to come out peacefully.  An electronic control device was used to assist in taking HERNANDEZ into custody.

There were no injuries to HERNANDEZ, deputies, or the occupants of the apartment.

HERNANDEZ had been arrested for numerous charges.  One of the charges was for homicide.

A murder suspect escapes, they should have shot him. So, they transport inmates to get their blood drawn? I thought they had medical staff, phlebotomists included at the facilities?

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing, Michele.

Michelle- They do, i dont know why they didnt have his blood drawn there, and if he was high risk they should have had an escort the whole time. Also if he was just at the little jail/holding place by the court then they may not have pheblotomists there, but i would assume so. interesting.. they should have shot him. shoot first, queston later.

we had a police officer killed by an inmate who had to go in for an ex-ray here in utah.  He grabbed the cops gun and killed him then escaped.  Seems like they should have all that stuff at the prisons, it would cost more money but be safer for everyone.

If they don't  have the medical services available it would be well worth it for everyones safety to get them. Now a days with the technology, the inmates should NOT leave the prison perimeters at all, especially high risk or maximum whatever they call them.

your right they shouldnt.. you would think the law would have caught on by now.. guess not.

Paallllleeesssseeee, what are they supposed to do if they go into cardiac arrest? This is just a real picture to show that these dirtbags can make or get anything remember, the hand is quicker than the eye....... Accidents happen... The good news is they caught him in a couple of minutes... I agree they should have shot him. They probably would have gotten away with it to. Im sure it would have been within dept.policy. Inmates are moved on a daily basis. What you must realize is you probably work with walk around, shop around or may even be friends with crooks, people you dont even know THATS the scarry part of society today. Its kind of like high blood pressure.......todays crooks are a silent killer during the daylight hours, I know that is a comforting thought isnt it..

Jpatto, our point was that for simple services x-rays, blood draws, routine check-ups-I myself, thought they were performed at the jail/prison. I guess I didn't realize they transport you to KMC for a simple blood draw.  And yes, i did find out about a past friend who was a crook.  I'm sure we all know someone but sooner or later it will catch up to them, it usually does.

Mich -- blood draws are not always a smple matter. Depends on how many vials, the different markers being looked for (thus what is in each vial), etc.

However, as OB has made clear in the past, the reporting is such that in this case  a  "simple blood draw"  may have been vastly more.

When a crack pipe, ostensibly used for meth, suddenly goes to a  "drug pipe" how can you be sure a blood draw is not something much more? I don't blame TBC as much in this regard as the public who  "draws" conculsions from limited data. Capiche?

excuse me michele, those are performed in prison generally this dirtbag must have been in jail or holding somewhere, however, the dirtbags are transported from prison also. We did alot of clinical in the joint but Im not quite sure what they have available at county stops.......There is always an exception to every rule
