Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Honors Employees for
Heroism, Outstanding Service at Annual Medal of Valor Ceremony

North Kern State Prison Staffer Honored at Statewide Medal of Valor Event
Sacramento - The Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation today honored an
employee from North Kern State Prison for actions above and beyond the normal
demands of correctional service. The awards were presented by CDCR Secretary
James Tilton at a ceremony on the West Steps of the State Capitol. Nearly 100
employees received awards that ranged from the Medal of Valor to Unit Citations.

Correctional Officer Raymond Montion was awarded the Bronze Star medal at today's
ceremony.

The Corrections Star (Bronze) is the Department's award for saving a life without
placing oneself in peril. The employee shall have used proper training and tactics in a
professional manner to save, or clearly contribute to saving, the life of another person.

Officer Montion was awarded the Bronze Star for his actions in saving the life of an
inmate who was attacked by other inmates with handmade stabbing weapons.

North Kern State Prison, located in Delano, CA, opened in April 1993 and has a
population of approximately 5,500 inmates. The prison has a Reception Center, a
General Population Medium Custody Facility, and a Minimum Support Facility. The
Reception Center processes incoming inmates from various county jails and determines
the inmate's custody classification and prison placement.
