The family of the one-year-old who was hospitalized last month after drinking lighter fluid needs help.

The father of Aniken Roquemore is struggling to pay for medical bills associated with the April 27 incident, when Aniken drank the fluid during a family barbecue at his home. He is out of the hospital but has respiratory problems and will need long-term aid.

Father Jermaine Roquemore does not have insurance because he is a seasonal fire fighter, and doesn’t get aid when he’s off duty.

The family is hosting a barbecue and concert fundraiser along with area businesses from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday at the AYSO soccer field at Cal State Bakersfield. A car show will also be featured.

Thanks for the clarification.   If this is the first time this has ever happened to one of the family's children, then I'm not sure CPS is the right step.  I'm sure they were questioned up one side and down the other by the ER docs and paramedics.  The parents screwed up.  It happens.  I bet they never do it again.

"They can't have a car wash, Michele. Any and all car wash spots are booked for the next two decades in anticipation of the deaths of gangbangers whose mothers steadfastly insist that they weren't in a gang."

you took the words right out of my mouth... ohh but now we are heartless people... because we dont support the gang members..

It would be a waste of time for CPS to investigate this, I can tell you that.  These children are not abused and do not have history with CPS.

Has anyone else, besides myself, wondered if CPS has investigated this accident?

Aniken, I believe is 20 months old.  The family was BBQ-ing and the mom ran inside to get the matches and when she came back it's was realized he ingested lighter fluid.  I don't know anymore details.  I just know my kids are a little older(17, 10,7) and we usually leave ours outside on the table and have since removed it because you never know, plus younger kids are usually over at our house.

JBS- you're right!! I forgot about the gangsta car washes!  Better for us, I'd rather be eating some BBQ!

How old was this child? One?  Was he closer to 12 months or 23?  I'm just trying to picture how a child this young would get the fluid unnoticed?  I'm not trying to be crass...I'm truly curious because we may be able to learn something from this.  Did they set it on the ground or something?  I'm glad the poor baby is okay.

They can't have a car wash, Michele. Any and all car wash spots are booked for the next two decades in anticipation of the deaths of gangbangers whose mothers steadfastly insist that they weren't in a gang.

Another reason for universal healthcare, so families and friends won't have to have garage sales, car washes, or BBQ for  sick people.  I posted a youtube video at www.youtube.com/valleynews after McCarthy voted against a plan to provide universal healthcare coverage.

I get your point RF..... but then again.... I am a little more *twisted* than most folks !

I hope the little guy is OK.

i hope they raise enough money to take care of the bills.

that is really sad, but what was a baby doing around lighter fluid and also no parental supervision?

im just glad so far the baby didnt have any worse problems, even though this will affect him for the rest of his life.

The BBQ is a great ideal, having bounce houses and music as well. Some firetrucks will be on display as well. I will post the prices when I find it.

Besides a BBQ beats a car wash, right?

I'm glad the family's getting financial help--they'll need it.

.

But...a barbecue?
