An Amber Alert issued recently for a 3-year-old Sacramento-area boy believed to have been abducted by his father has been deactivated. The child was located, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.

The boy, Aleksandr Olteanu, was taken allegedly by his father, David Olteanu, 28, Thursday in Sacramento, according to an alert issued by the Sacramento sheriff's department. The father was also being sought on suspicion of rape and other charges, authorities said.

Amber Alert signs were posted on electronic freeway signs in Bakersfield.

According to reports by The Sacramento Bee, the boy and his father were found in Bucharest, Romania. Olteanu has been detained by Romanian officials, and Aleksandr is not harmed.

From Sacramento to Romania? Was the amber alert a little late or what?

Tis a puzzlement. How does the kid wind up in Romania?

He is Romanian..Duh...there are other countries out there.....And Romania is really a nice country to visit .but I would never travel there using  my USA passport...

My implication was how does someone get on a plane (presumably) and go to a foreign country with an abducted child when law enforcement is alerted? The alert issued late? Apparently, some sort of alert notified Romanian police.

If you read the SacBee article (before the link went 404), they say that by the time officials started checking flights, they were already on a flight. So I would assume the alert got issued too late as it takes ~2 hours to get from Sacramento to SFO (may take longer or be faster depending on traffic). Or there is a lag time between the alert being issued and airports checking their passenger manifest.
