Friday, May 30, 2008 at  0002 hrs (12:02 a.m. PST) a reinforced 1st alarm from the Bakersfield FIRE Department consisting of 4 engines, 2 trucks, 1 squad, 1 battalion officer. 1 arson unit responded to a report of structure fire at 225 Monterey St. Upon arrival the first arriving company found a fully involved building to the rear of the address. It appears the building was a garage that was converted into a living quarters. Using attack lines the fire was controlled with 10 minutes. 
 
The house and outbuilding was vacant and appeared to be abandoned. Damage to the building was significant. The adjacent house was protected from any damage. The Bakersfield Building Department was called to secure the vacant house.
 
This fire is the second structure fire in the neighborhood in the past 48 hours. There have also been multiple mischief fires that have been set in dumpsters and piled trash in this area. If anyone has information related to these fires in the east Bakersfield area please contact the Bakersfield FIRE Department at 326-3911.
