Sausage McMuffin dispute costs job of deputy city attorney
In the stuff you can't make up, a deputy city attorney earning at least $89,000 a year resigned from his job after his arrest over a $6.44 dispute at a McDonald's. Kern County sheriff's investigation reports say that Michael Richards got mad that his original drive-through order for Sausage McMuffins didn't include eggs. He parked, went inside and argued with the clerk. She said the special didn't include eggs. So he paid for the difference and got four Sausage McMuffins with eggs. But the clerk had put the bag with his original order on a shelf. Still upset, Richards jumped over the counter, pushed the clerk and took the bag with his original order too. That bag was worth $6.44. Richards, 33, was arrested a short time later at his home. A few days later he resigned from his city attorney job that he had held since 2006. The minimum pay for his level is $89,000 a year. So he had got everything he wanted. He paid for it. But still felt some need to take a bag he didn't pay for. I believe Sausage McMuffins are one of the best fast food breakfast meals you can get. But they aren't worth $89,000 a year. Or a little mark on your reputation. Posted by Steve E. Swenson

Even though the "Twinkie defense" didn't work for Dan White back in 1979, maybe the "Sausage McMuffin defense" will work for Mr. Richards in 2008. posted by

I dunno..I had one of "those days" on Saturday. Long day babysitting the 3 week old with an evening ahead babysitting the 17 month old and instead of stopping at Longs for eggs I went to the 99 cent store. When I got to the store they were out of eggs so I had to drive over to Vons where I got the blasted eggs and some Propel and later discovered the Propel had expired. (Family coming for breakfast Sunday morning) Came home to find trash from the kitchen scattered all over the living room, and the dog looking down at the floor in shame. Not shameful enough to suit me. If I had gone to McDonalds at that moment and they screwed up my order, WWIII would look like a pea shooting match in comparison and that atty's crime would have been laughed at.. I can relate to the gentleman. posted by

This is the most stupidest thing I have heard. Usually when you go to a fast food resteraunt and they mess up your order they let you keep the messed up order along with the correct one. It just goes in the trash unless this McDonalds planned to serve to someone else :) As far as this man is concerned for pushing the clerk, maybe he forgot to take his bi-polar medicine. posted by

I think this is crazy....drop all charges allow this man to move on with his life. I have issues with Mc Donald's. The employee's at the Mc D's near me are complete idiots. I have wanted to come across the counter on a couple of managers before. They can never get you order correct. If you say no cheese then every burger in the bag won't have cheese.....they just make me sick. OK I'm back. Bad days are terrible. If I am having a bad day I am a lunatic so I feel for the mo- fo that forgets my egg. Everyone has bad days. Gas cost 5.00 bucks a gallon there is going to be many more assaults .........just hopefully they are not at Mc D's.

What is it about City and County government attorneys in this town? Is there some credential you need on the resume or application to certify jerk status before you get hired in this town for one of these jobs? The husband and wife legal team who had the meltdown in Santa Barbara has that case still on the docket, and now we read about shyster egg-roid rage on Niles Street. Anyone shopping for good eats at 6AM on a Sunday morning, and decides on a Mickey D to satisfy his jones after cruising Niles Street has some major disorders in my book.

I've been waiting for this blog since the News Alert came in my email! C'mon guys, yes, we've all been there, where we want to take our frustration out on the minimum wage employee at a fast food restaurant, but the point is, Richards went wacko - he jumped over the counter and pushed an employee. HE WAS IN AN EGG RAGE! posted by

I can never figure out why people eat at corporate fast food joints. The workers are forced to become factory styled robots doing assembly line routines all day long. The pay these people get is terrible. The only thing the customers seem capable of leaving after dining or driving through these establishments is a heap of garbage for staff and city workers to pick up. If starch and corn syrup are on your must-have-diabetes-wish-list these places are tailor made for you. If you refuse to pay for any service why would you expect to receive any? posted by

Maybe that was the real issue Tiff. Like Nancy II pointed out the movie "Falling Down." Which is a good one to watch if you have never seen it. My favorite scene is when he explains the "concept" to the failed drive by shooter. posted by

While his behavior was unwarranted, I can understand his frustration with this particular store, especially the morning shift. I have quit going to McDonald's for political reasons however, this store. I quit going to long ago. They can never get your order right, and they are not able to fill orders as you want them as other McDonalds do. At least that has been my experience with the workers there, unless I talk to the manager. It seems the workers don't know what comes with what special. I have got the feeling from some workers there that they don't want to be bothered with special orders either. This McDonalds has got to be the worst one in posted by

After reading everyone's comments it is hard for me to stop laughing. I'm biased against the attorney because I worked at McDs when I was a teenager. The punishment should fit the crime. The attorney should be forced to work at McD for a year, so he'll know what it is like working at a fast food restaurant. His salary from McDs should go to a college fund for the clerk that he asaulted, so she'll never have to work at McDs again. posted by

Tiffanilynn, He stole an extra bag worth $6.44. "So he had got everything he wanted. He paid for it. But still felt some need to take a bag he didn't pay for." That sure is an expensive $6.44. See article: http://www.bakersfield.com/... posted by

McDonald's has that effect on me too. That's why I don't eat there. This guy should use the "sausage" defence. His ability to make rational decisions was diminished by grease clogging the artery to his brain. Then he shoud sue McDonald's for causing the condition. posted by

I'm lost. I went back and read the article again.....the guy paid for the first order at the drive through, went in and gave the bag back and paid the difference between the "special price with no egg" and the one with egg, both bags were put on the shelf, he jumped the counter and grabbed his bag. Where did the $6.44 come in? What did I miss? Or am I still asleep? (edited) Hmm...wouldn't anyone ordering an Egg McMuffin have a reasonable expectation of paying for, and getting, an egg with their muffin? What kind of "special price" would they have on an Egg McMuffin that had no egg? Maybe since McD's went to being a "Coffee House" with Lattes and Frappes (McCafe) They're working on keeping your cholesterol down by not putting eggs on Egg McMuffins. This warrants further investigation. We need a special undercover team on this right away. posted by

I cant believe the cops wasted their time going to the guys house to arrest him over$6.44 and that McDs pressed the issue. How many times have you got home before realizing they didnt put half your order in the bag?. Or had to deal with an employee with an attitude, I kinda feel sorry for the guy. Sausage McMuffins dont come with egg. This story is pathetic on both parts. obviously the guy had other issues he was dealing with.

Ahhhh...I didn't pick up on the "Sausage McMuffin" part. However, that doesn't explain the part about him paying twice and being accused of stealing the alleged muffins. We're getting closer to solving this crime now. If anything, the guy should be accused of battery for shoving the worker. posted by

Off subject. Always check your bag before driving away from the window at Taco Bell. They'll short you a taco or two EVERY time. They once shorted my husband his entire $7.00 order. A buck here a buck there, it all adds up. posted by

Nancy, He paid for one bag of Sausage McMuffins, but he took two bags. The second bag was worth $6.44. This thread cracks me up in how people wronged at McDonald's feel that corporate giant is at fault. Our readers recommend: |
