Courthouse brawl quelled by cops
Sheriff’s deputies assigned to Kern County Superior Court had to use pepper spray to break up a fight that erupted between two groups of women in front of the downtown Bakersfield courthouse Tuesday morning. Court bailiffs try to anticipate and head off conflicts between opposing parties inside individual courtrooms. They will eject people in the gallery who appear to be inciting problems. And those who try to communicate with in-custody defendants are told to leave. But emotions can run high when so much is at stake. It's a wonder that such incidents aren't more common in Kern's courts. Maybe it's a true testament to the work done by court bailiffs every day. What do you think? 53 comments from 20 users

Maybe it is a true testament to the court bailiffs. It's probably a truer testament of citizens who have a sense of propriety and respect and know how to behave. posted by

Good point, cat. As a Californian reporter covering courts, I believe most people show a great deal of respect for the authority and seriousness of the court process. On the other hand, people with criminal records, their friends and families also make up a good percentage of those who visit Kern's courts. -- S. Mayer posted by

Certain friends and family members know how to act like civilized people. Far too many don't, though. Many families in this valley, from the grandparents on down, act like nothing less than feral cats. It's spay and neuter time. posted by

reyna805, respectfully, the only thing I can see from OldBlue is submental vomit comming from an entity comfortable, and a bit too self-satisfied, to spew annonymously in a blog with no other purpose in mind. I hope he doesn't represent the law enforcement community in B-town. -virgil posted by

There are no Sally Joes or Billy Bobs in my family. Both mom and dad grew up in the Ozarks, but their family members had names like George, Margaret, Mary, Catherine, Carl, Jesse, and so on. Dizzy Dean was a friggin' hick, but he had a 98 mph fastball, which helped things. posted by

I'm have to agree with Maggiepoo on this one. I love Bakersfield. But, the white trash of this town are far more ghetto than any ethnic group. And, OldBlue...I'm guessing that you are sticking out your "redneck" right? posted by

Mag, I wasn't talking about whether OB's comment was racist or not (I wouldn't call it jumping to conclusions; I would call it an educated guess), I was talking about "racist" comments in general. Any Caucasian who tells the painful truth about a minority is called a racist, but that doesn't mean that his/her racist statement isn't a true statement... posted by

When I first saw this blog I thought this sounded like a child custody fray. But I can see that it was about some very deep hurt. Negligence and death. A sad, sad combination. I could see myself losing it in this case, especially if my child was killed. Oldblue's comment was certainly uncalled for, whatever the case. posted by

Three Bakersfield women arrested after a brawl broke out in front of the downtown courthouse Tuesday have been identified by the Kern County Sheriff’s Department. Quemesha Ellis, 21, and Jamika Walker, 20, were arrested on charges of fighting in public and resisting arrest. Karnesha Sawyers, 28, was arrested on the single charge of fighting in public. The fighting broke out at just after 11 a.m. outside the glass doors of the county justice building at Truxtun and Chester avenues. Sheriff’s deputies assigned to Kern County Superior Court used pepper spray to break up the fight. What apparently began inside the courthouse as a verbal exchange between two families escalated into a physical confrontation outside. Other women who were not arrested were left wiping pepper spray residue from their eyes following the incident. A witness said the women had been attending a hearing for 21-year-old Michael Montgomery, who is accused of driving drunk and ramming his vehicle into a tree earlier this year, killing two passengers in the car. The incident apparently erupted between members of the victims’ families and the defendant’s supporters. -- BNT member Steven Mayer posted by

I bet Montgomery's family was trying to explain to the victim's family that he had just started a new job, joined the church last Sunday, and is a good family man who was trying to "turn his life around" The victim's family didn't buy it. I hope the victims family won round 1. posted by

At least the brawl was understandable and not over some hogwash like "She wz lookin' at my man." Good call OB...and why am I not surprised? Although the Billy Bob thing would have been just as likely. You hardly EVER see Seven Oaks folks fighting on the courthouse steps. They settle their disputes with lawyers. posted by

Too uppity... or too intelligent to feel that a punch will settle anything? Having said that, I'm not uppity, don't live in Seven Oaks (I live in the 'Dale) and have never been in a fight in my life. However, if my child was killed in an accident like that and cross words were spoken by the "other side" I might have gone for them too. As I said, this was understandable considering the circumstances. Grief and rage at a senseless death of a youngster changes the rules. posted by

To all who are wondering how and what here it goes, I am related to victum Rianna Zamarripa who died in the car crash, Michael Montgomery is trying to say he is innocent when the truth is he was drunk and tried to run from the scence, but due to his small injuries he couldnt get far. The californian news needs to update the story on how it took place regarding that man! He is NOT innocent at all. Now regarding the fight Quemesha and Karnesha are the ones who started the whole thing name calling, and then tried to jump my aunt Diane Bell from behind. Miss Walker was protecting my aunt and herself from theses Hood Rats! As a matter of fact Quemesha is the one who gave Michael Montgomery her car keys KNOWING her boyfriend was drunk therefor I feel she as well should be punished and sent to jail. Thanks to Audrey B and Husbandmaterial. posted by

selina, thank you for the update of what really happened. After reading your post, I closed my eyes and could clearly visualize the entire incident. Too bad I couldn't hear all the yellin' and hollerin'. And the last I heard, EVERYONE is presumed innocent until they plead guilty or are convicted by a jury. Even a loser like Montgomery.
