Maybe a guard sucked the life out of him, like the KCSO detentions deputy wanted to with the work release inmate.

The Bakersfield news today sounds like the National Enquirer

Mr. Blue -

Respectfully, it appears you are enamored with the idea of homosexual sex.  Thought I'd just throw that out there.

It's curious that in Kern County the sheriff and the coroner are the same elected position.

That's actually quite common Virgil.

posted by VirgilAnderson on Jul 23, 2008 at 07:24 PM

Anti -

What's common, exactly?

Anti-

I'm not trying to be rude. But, if you meant that coroner/sheriff,  as opposed to having the positions of sheriff and coroner separate, are common then I wonder if someone knows how many counties in
California are set up that way.

What I'm thinking about are conflict of interest issues when it comes to the county coroner investigating the sheriff detention facilities' incidents.

That's not rude at all Virgil. In California, there is no set way to have a coroner. Some are elected, some are appointed. Many counties have a Sheriff/Coroner. I don't know the exact total, but I'm betting most of the northern counties do. Sac, Merced, Sonoma, Solano, Stanislaus, Alameda, Contra Costa, Napa, Santa Cruz etc.

There has always been speculation about a conflict of interest. In fact, I think I remember one Native American suing a particular county over it.

Here's a good story for ya. My brother knew a 70 something colleague who was killed by an ambulance in a Southern State. The Coroner concluded that the guy had a heart attack, then crossed over into the ambulance's lane. The problem was that all the witnesses said that it was the ambulance that crossed over. Guess who owned the ambulance service? That's right, the Coroner. In the South nepotism and conflicts of interest are extremely common. Many can get away with a slap in the hand. Unfortunately, for him, the guy was originally from New York, so they layed the wood on the Yankee.

I wonder what the suspicious circimstances are.  Isn't Wasco State Prison a maximum security prison?

posted by VirgilAnderson on Jul 23, 2008 at 08:11 PM

That's a good story anti. Too bad for the Yankee.

In the interest of fair play - you know, appropriate democratic process, safe guarding due process etc. - having the sheriff and coroner separate would be the way to go.

From Old Blue:

Thats the funniest thing I've heard tonight!

Virgil, I am now convinced you are MaggiePoo or his/her reincarnation. That's not a good thing.

Good morning. I hope I didn't hurt Mr. Blue's feelings yesterday - just trying to keep the conversation real.

Maybe I came on too strong. Sorry guys for any insults felt.  The words are what get me going - knowing what people think. After all, our actions show what we hold to be true. On the blog there are no actions, only words.

I like debate...

Yeah, thanks Lanabuford. I might have chased Mr. Blue away. Maybe he'll come back, though - stronger than before, with more than racial slurs and gender phobic guffaws.

Oh yeah Virg --

OB's been chased away!

BWAHAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

His line about the inmate getting the life sucked outa him by a guard is a classic!

As far as chasing him away, never presume you've  "chased someone away" when you have a penknife and he has a blooper (M-79).

posted by ChicoEsquela on Jul 24, 2008 at 12:55 PM

And Virgie, if you want some real skinny on Coroner's, ME's, Sheriff-Coroner's, inquests, conficts of interest,  etc. you might try talking to someone who knows - both the history and ramifications therein - before you make unwarranted (if not out and out ridiculous) assumptions.

Anti has it pretty much right about the Northern Counties and more are going that way all the time from what I see.

Dude -

it was just a question.
