For Immediate Release                & nbsp;   Tuesday, July 29, 2008

Carjacking Pursuit and Arrest

On 7/28/08, at 9:45 p.m. Bakersfield Police responded to a report of a carjacking
in the 4200 blk of Columbus Street.

The victim, a 26 year old female, reported that she had just parked and exited
her vehicle when she was approached by a suspect armed with a firearm.  The
suspect demanded the keys to her vehicle. After obtaining her keys he fled in her
2001 BMW 325i.

On 7/29/08, at 12:47 a.m. Bakersfield Police officers observed the vehicle being
driven south on Inyo Street.  They attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver
failed to yield and led officers on an approximate 50 minute pursuit which ended
in the 4400 block of Monitor Street.  The driver, Carlos Rivas (26), of Bakersfield,
fled on foot and entered a residence there.  He was arrested a short time later
with the use of a Bakersfield Police canine.  Two other suspects, Mark Azua (24)
and Ray Behill (20), both of Bakersfield, remained in the vehicle and were taken
into custody.

A stolen loaded firearm was located in the vehicle.  Rivas was identified as the
suspect from the original carjacking incident.

Rivas was arrested for carjacking, parole violation, weapons violations and gang
participation.  Azua and Behill were arrested for weapon violations and gang
participation.

Hope her car wasn't damaged too bad.

Upon looking at Rivas' criminal record here in Kern County, I would say that when he pleads guilty to the charges in this case, he's facing a VERY long prison sentence. Bye bye, loser.

There was an Alfonso Rivas in Porterville when I lived there in 2004. Guy was about the size of a third-grader, with the tattoos and red knee socks. Tough guy - all 120 pounds of him. I was watching the news one morning in 2006 after I had moved to Visalia, and Kim Stephens on KMPH said "The body of Alfonso Rivas was found lying on a sidewalk in Dinuba." YEAH!!! I said, pumping my fists in the air. Stabbed to death. You know it's going to be a good day when it starts off like that!
