Date:  Thursday, July 31, 2008
Time:  12:15:04 PM
Department Contact: Raymond Pruitt
Phone:  661-391-7559

National Night Out 2008 is scheduled for Tuesday August 5th. This event is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, and involves communities and law enforcement agencies throughout the United States. This will be the 14th year the Kern County Sheriff’s Office has participated in the event.

This year, the Kern County Sheriff’s Office will partner with the Neighborhood Place Community Learning Center to host an event from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the center, located at 437 Willow Drive in Oildale.

National Night Out is an evening that is set aside for communities to show their support for law enforcement and to send a message that citizens are committed to work with law enforcement to fight drugs, gangs, and crime in their neighborhood. Community members are invited to join us and enjoy a hot dog barbecue, games, music, and Sheriff’s Office displays including S.W.A.T., Technical Investigations, Bomb Squad, Search and Rescue, Bike Patrol, Gang Suppression, Detentions, Air Support, Crime Prevention, and K-9 demonstrations. The Citizens Services Unit will also be offering free child identification cards for children in attendance.

This is an excellent opportunity to send a message to criminals that the community and the Sheriff’s Office are working together to make Kern County a safe place to live.

This event is free of charge and open to the public. The media is encouraged to attend.

If you would like further information about this event, please contact Crime Prevention Specialist Jodi Rankin at 661-391-7494.

Arkansas Man Dies Tampering With Electric Meter

CONWAY, Ark. — A Conway-area man died from electrocution while he was using jumper cables to hook up power to his house after his electricity was shut off.

Authorities say 33-year-old Lonnie Montgomery was found dead Wednesday outside his home on Skunk Hollow Road. He was still clutching one end of a set of jumper cables. Officials say the other end was connected the electricity meter box.

Faulkner County sheriff's Lieutenant Matt Rice says it appears that Montgomery tampered with the meter box and a plastic cover installed by Entergy Arkansas after service was cut due to nonpayment.

Sheriff's Major Andy Shock says Montgomery was attempting to adjust or remove the jumper cables when he was electrocuted.
