Name correction in Oildale beating/chivalry case
I spoke today with the wife of Anthony Gonzalez, one of the men who deputies say came to a woman's aid in Oildale last week. She corrected the spelling of his last name, which was listed as Gonzales by deputies. Gonzalez and Travis Martin allegedly stopped Jerry Bogue from beating his ex-girlfriend with a stick on July 30. They knocked Bogue unconscious, using the same stick against him, and were arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. The prosecutor's office, however, has decided not to file charges against Gonzalez and Martin. Martin was released and Gonzalez remains jailed on a probation violation Bogue pleaded not guilty Monday to assault with a deadly weapon other than a gun and spousal abuse. He remains in jail on $25,000 bail. --Jason Kotowski 4 comments from 4 users

I'm confused. TBC has an article posted this afternoon that the wife of Anthony Gonzales is named Petra Ortiz. Don't most married couples have the same last name? Or is this an exception in Oildale? posted by

It's probably just an issue with shortening their name to just one last name. Traditionally, hispanics have two last names. For married women, one last name will be from her father and the other from her husband's father. For unmarried women and for men, one last name comes from their father and one from their mother. Optionally, a married woman can retain her unmarried name as well. Traditionally, the father's name comes first, then the mother's name (or the husband's father's name for married women who opt to take it). Now, if someone tells you their full name, including both last names, and you shorten that down to just the final name mentioned as the last name, a married woman's last name would be that of her husband's father, but a man's last name would be shortened to his mother's, so they would not match. To make matters even more confusing, if a hispanic opts to shorten their name down to just one last name, they will often just give their father's name (the first of their two last names), so again, there would be a name mismatch. If that's unclear, look at the examples in this article: perez.cs.vt.edu/
