Stolen Vehicle Pursuit

On 8/6/08, at approximately 2:29 a.m. Bakersfield Police officers observed two
vehicles following each other in the area of Nordic Drive and Valhalla Drive.  The
vehicles attempted to evade the officers but were located in a nearby cul de sac.

One of the vehicles, a Honda Accord, was immediately abandoned by the driver
who fled on foot.  The vehicle rolled forward and struck a parked vehicle.  The
driver of the other vehicle, a Ford F150 truck, fled at a high rate of speed.

The officers attempted to stop the truck but the driver failed to yield and led
officers on a pursuit.  The pursuit went west on Stockdale Hwy where at Old
River Road officers deployed a spike strip.  The suspect drove over the spike
strip causing the front tires to deflate. The suspect continued fleeing and
attempted to turn north on Allen Road but was unable to negotiate the turn and
collided with a traffic signal pole.

The occupants of the truck, two 17 year old males, were taken into custody
without incident.  They were booked into the Kern County Juvenile Hall on
charges of auto theft, conspiracy, possession of a stolen vehicle, and possession
of burglary tools.  The driver was also charged with evading a peace officer and
driver’s license violation.  The driver of the Honda Accord was not located.

Both the Honda Accord and Ford pickup were determined to have been stolen
earlier in the evening.  The Honda Accord was found to contain numerous
amounts of suspected stolen property consisting of car audio and video
components.
