Riot at Lerdo Jail

A massive brawl involving several hundred inmates at the Lerdo Minimum Security Facility injured at least 24 prisoners and caused a scramble of ambulances, deputies and firefighters to descend on the facility Friday afternoon.

It’s unknown what started the riot, which began in the recreation yard and then continued in the housing units, Sheriff’s Senior Deputy Michael Whorf said. Six prisoners were taken to Kern Medical Center and 8 others were being treated at the jail.

No deputies or jail staff were injured during the melee. It doesn’t appear any weapons were used.

Whorf said fights in jail are common, but they usually involve just a couple people. A brawl of this scale is very unusual.

The other two facilities of the jail were locked down as more staff came to help the minimum security staff control the situation, Whorf said. The facility remains under lockdown as deputies are going from cell to cell to find any other injured prisoners and any weapons.

Time to move the whole circus to the high desert---in tents---and rethink if they want to go back again....they live better than ALOT of people out here...and still they cry..why?...WE'RE taking care of your kids (welfare)....over some turf--or disrespect--and for what--some roach and rat infested neighborhood...keep it--it's all yours

Two words: Chain gang.

On a day like today, swinging a hula hoe would be lotsa fun...

Back in the mid-80's there was a large riot at Lerdo. It started around 9 at night. The inmates started fires in the buildings and were all out of control. The KCSO put out a countywide call for help. A bunch of us jumped in patrol cars and headed out there from downtown.  I remember coming over the hill on Lerdo Hwy. and seeing the flames from all the fires at the facility. It was quite the sight.

And I wonder what ever happened to the idiot that I jabbed in the stomach with my baton because he wouldn't back up like I ordered him too?

He probably became a real estate lender and blogs on here now.

it was whites vs mexicans ... quite a scene ... worst riot in long long time .... no weapons my patootie  .. a lock in a sock makes a nice sap ...  its a miracle the 900 inmates housed in this facility didnt burn the old shacks down ... 900 inmates vs about 25 officers is kinda scaryyyy

Fred,

I can't imagine being one of those twenty five ... That's what training is for, I guess.

You mentioned a racial thing.  The riot was about that - you think?...  maybe the racial thing made worse by too many guys holed up in too small of a space?

Virgil -

well it was mainly whites fighting mexicans for sure .. not sure what sparked it ..  but once the **it hit the fan  the battle lines were racially segregated ... I am sure the deplorable conditions out there were a contributing factor ...  that facility consists of old, delabitated wooden barracks cooled with evap coolers .. crammed full of inmates .. u can imagine how it was yesterday at 104 degrees... this jail is rated as one of the worst in the nation ...   this county cant seem to find the $$ to rebuild it ...  replacement plans have been on the books for a decade .. but they never get funded by the politicins because jails just aint a priority .. well sooner or later, the inmates will force the issue by torchng the place  ( again) - OB is right .. they almost burnt the place down in the 1980s ...

I sure would not want to work out there these days

Thanks, Fred. It sounds bad - I would not want to work out there, either.

Don't worry virgil, you will never have to work out there. You couldn't pass the psych. test to get hired....

Are you in a mood again, Blue?

What do you need to do,anyway? You know,.... to get hired to work out there? It sounds like you may know. Maybe you're in a mood to tell me.

I'm interested.....

Blue,

I just read the thread again- you worked out there. Of course I'm not really interested in working there. I'm more interested in understanding what it was/is like working there.

There was a riot there yesterday. I kind of would like to understand as much as I can about it....

Tell me, or not.

Virg -- don't worry.......... judging from some of your comments you may find out from the inside what it is all about...............

Better get some tats...... get fugly

I responded to that fire in the 80's  and few years later responded to a similar situation at the new air conditioned RTC in Shafter.  Blacks vs. Mexicans .  Quality of inmate housing has very little to do with it IMO.

Chico,

What comments are your referring to, seriously?

Once again you are right my friend anglo..........

You could put the jetsom and flotsom of life in a Taj Mahal and they'd do what they do best.

Did anyone listen to our buddy TJ today?

It was good good good........ he talked some smack about all this stuff.

Virg....... you'da loved it.......... smack from an inmate POV and backed up by a judge and another lieyer about officer keyster et al.............

Good job TJ....... one of your best shows.........

Chico,

Dude, sorry I feel like I'm out of the loop - keyster et al..?

Clarify, please...

Virg -- Boy, you are up on the bit pard.....and you are out of the loop.

But its a loop better being left out of

Keister, keyster, etc...... would refer to the wonderful high level of  "inmate watchers"  and their alimentary canals..........

For further elucidation in this regard, please refer questions to Mr. Randomfactor........  ;-)
