& nbsp;   October is National Fire Prevention Month

The Bakersfield FIRE Department will be taking the lead in promoting fire prevention efforts in the Bakersfield area during this month of heightened awareness. The BFD is supporting this national effort to educate communities in ways to be fire safe.

The National Fire Prevention Month program has been a key element in the BFD’s yearly effort to reduce fire injury in our community for decades. But the program actually has its roots in the aftermath of the Great Chicago Fire of October 9, 1871. That devastating fire brought sweeping changes to the way fires were fought and how community’s viewed fire prevention.

The Bakersfield FIRE Department welcomes an opportunity to share information on the things people can do to improve their safety at home, school and work from FIRE.
Battalion Chief Garth Milam and other BFD personnel will be available throughout the Month to assist media agencies in getting out the message.
