Pit Bull Attack

This is a news release of the Kern County Sheriff's Office.
Please do not contact the Sheriff's Communications Center.

Date:  Tuesday, November 11, 2008
Time:  3:34:01 PM

Details: On 11-11-08, at about 1300 hours, a three year old boy was attacked by his parents' pit bull.  The pit bull was chained to a tree in the backyard of the residence when the child wandered up to the dog.  The child's mother ran up to the dog and the dog released the child.  The child sustained severe lacerations to his face and forehead, and puncture wounds to his upper right arm, stomach, and upper right leg.  Deputies applied direct pressure to the child's injuries to control bleeding at the scene and the child was transported to Kern Medical Center via ambulance.  The dog was confiscated by Kern County Animal Control.

Another attack?  When will it end?

posted by witterpitters on Nov 11, 2008 at 05:26 PM

On the news it was stated that the dog was CHAINED to a tree. Do people not understand how cruel that is? Do people not understand that when you treat an animal - any animal that way they turn mean out of anger. How would you feel if someone chained you to a tree 24/7? If the dog won't stay in the yard then find it another home. I've only had to do that once - but I found the dog a great home where she could run to her hearts content as that is what she wanted to do.

There used to be 2 pit bulls who lived behind me. Both were chained 24/7 and pretty much ignored. They were vicious. When they got loose one day, they killed my cat and threatened me. I have also had neighbors who had pit bulls who were treated as pets and they were just adorable dogs. Why the difference? The same as with people...somebody loved them and showed it. Somebody made sure they had food and shelter and played with them.  I wager most of the kids in gangs have been treated like the chained up dog.

It won't end as long as humans are allowed to mistreat animals and children.

"When will it end?"

When two-thirds of the current population in Oildale is relocated to California City.

I don't have a front fence and Allie the Lab loves to be out front while I mow the yard so I put her on the chain for her "escape time."  I have a large back yard where she is free to run and play but I NEVER let either of my dogs out unrestrained.  I take Zack out front on the lease and also have a chain fastened in the flower bed so that he can be out front too while I do yard work.

When the roofers came last year I chained Allie while I was at work because they were coming in and out of the  back yard and needed the gate open.  I'm with Witters.  There are times one may need to chain their dogs for short periods of time but if you don't have a yard, don't get a dog.  If you have a small dog in your house, don't let it out unrestrained.

Geeze people, take care of your dogs, they don't know that a car can turn them into a grease spot on the road.

And to some dogs, a baby is no more than a kitten would be.  They do not have the power to reason.  Take care of your children around dogs.  Zack loves my little 6 month old guy  gives him kisses when I'm not looking, sleeps beside him, but when he leaves, Zack pees on his baby stuff if I leave it in the living room.  Jealousy?  Protector?   I dunno, but I don't go off and leave them alone together and he's just a Terrier.  We love them but THEY ARE DOGS !

AMEN NANCY!  Having to tie a dog for a specific reason for a short period of time is not out of line. But, as mentioned, I have seen too many of these pit bulls literally chained for days-weeks on end. food and water brought to them and that's about it. Have I reported these people....................yup. Did animal control do anything about it................nope. Well not until I called them after the two pits killed my cat and I gave animal control 5 minutes to get here or they would be picking up to dead dogs with .45 slugs in them!!! Boy did they come in a hurry that time! The guy of the phone kept saying "NO NO lady you don't want to do that"...................to which I replied, yes I do and you now have 4 minutes!  The owner got a ticket and his dogs were returned to him. He chained them up with bigger chains. One very hot July day the male pit got his chain wound around the pole and could not get to the water. I called BPD and by the time they got there the dog was dead. Really sad. That dog was not born mean any more then a human is born mean - they are made.

To anyone who must keep a dog chained up all the time, you really don't need or deserve a dog.
