Man dies in Kern River Canyon crash
A man allegedly speeding on Highway 178 through the Kern River Canyon lost his life when he slammed into the canyon wall Thursday morning, the California Highway Patrol reported. Donald Eugene Duvall, 43, of Wofford Heights was passing traffic at a high rate of speed at 7:25 a.m. when he lost control on a curve and struck a large boulder, the CHP said. He was taken to Kern Medical Center where he died of his injuries about an hour and a half later. 16 comments from 12 users

Not the first time; I dont' expect it to be the last. At least he didn't take someone with him who didn't want to go. Decent of him. posted by

Hey Catpaw, This man was a preacher and a very well respected man in the Kern community. He was on his way to work, and died tragically. I really hope that none of your family dies tragically before Christmas. Rest in peace, I Love you Uncle Donny! posted by

Donny Duvall was a wonderful man and a hard working Kern County employee that I had the good fortune to work with for many years. He had a heart of gold and has left behind a loving wife and four children and an identical twin brother. We will never forget you Donny. posted by

The canyon is treacherous at best. Too much speed makes it even more so. My daughter lived in Wofford Heights for many years and she always said the locals knew the canyon so well they traveled it at a higher rate of speed. I'm sorry for the loss of this man to his family and friends. Any time is a sad time to lose a loved one but Christmas is especially bad. Sending a prayer here for Gods comfort. posted by

Sorry if my comment offended. Reckless driving in the canyon, including excessive speed is reckless driving in the the canyon. The safety of others, such as passengers or on-coming cars are jepardized. No family should have the tragedy of a needless fatality. The needless death offends me. Were it one of my own involved in this accident, would I get an apology? posted by

To answer your question, of course you would receive my fullest apology and prayers for you and your family. All I was saying is my Uncle Donny was a very good man and I took the comment as very rude. I trust God that there is a reason for him going Home. I loved him dearly and he will be missed by many. I know not of what happened specifically, other than what is written above, so his allegedly speeding is just that, allegedly. I pretty sure that with normal conditions the posted speed limit through that part of Highway 178 is 55mph. I just drove the canyon last night and there was no unusual conditions. Maybe there was black ice or other factors not listed in the 3 sentence called a story above. I am not trying to make excuses, just morn for the loss of my Uncle. To my family: My prayers are with you, I love you all. I love you again Donny! Rest in peace with the Lord Jesus. posted by

I'm sorry for your loss. Very tragic and at such a time when we are all supposed to be happy and basking in the love of family. I am just curious- I used to work with Heaven; was it her dad? Again, sorry for your loss. May God bless you during this time of grief, and through the holiday season. posted by

My dad Donald Eugene Duvall Sr. was an honest, loving, caring, and straight forward man. He loved first the Lord God Almighty and then His family. Nothing ever got in the way of family time and playing computer games until it was morning and sometimes even until he had to call in sick. I will always miss my dad and I will never forget the man he wanted me to be. And I just want to be at least half of the man he was. Everywhere he went people loved him and asked for his advice. A true heroe to many families. His tragic death in the canyon was unexpected and the day before his vacation where he would have spent two weeks with his family at his favorite time of the year. All of the christmas presents under the tree will be that gifts he gave to his four children, Heaven Duvall Cox - 21, Donald Duvall JR (myself) - 20 (on December 23rd), Anna Duvall - 10 and Samuel Duvall - 7. Also, his Daughter in-law April M. Duvall (my wife) And Son in-law Michael Cox. And not to forget my loving Mother widowed at 40 Elizabeth Ann Duvall. He has had his days of speeding but, more recently he had calmed down and just took it easy in his Grand Marquee that I was happely able to help him get. (I would do anything to help him pay another car payment) He was going to buy new tires for the rear-end on thursday at lunch time. I am sure that the tires had something to do with the wreck. to all of the people that my dad helped and was able to sheare his love with: posted by

Don Duvall was a wonderfully spiritual man, loving father and husband and a great friend. I will miss him greatly. I feel however like from now on we will have an Angel in the Canyon. I believe he will always be near us and guiding us and protecting us as we drive through the canyon now. I know I felt comfortably at peace heading down the canyon the other day. I know Don will always be in our hearts and minds. To Don's family, my sincerest condolences are with you all. I love you all and dearly mourn your loss. If you need anything, please call. I may not able to be at the services Monday as my duties as soccer coach these days preoccupy most of my time. I will do my best, but know that my heart will be with you in sorrow and love.
