Trial scheduled for detention deputies accused of inmate's murder

It’s been nearly three years since a judge said three Kern County detention deputies would stand trial for second-degree murder in the beating death of jail inmate James Moore.

On Friday, a judge scheduled the delayed trial for May.

Prosecutors say Moore suffered a brutal beating at the hands of detention deputies August 2005 in Kern County Jail that later led to his death. Defense attorneys believe Moore over exerted himself during a tangle with deputies and gave himself a heart attack.

Detention deputies Roxanne Fowler, Daniel Lindini and Ralph Contreras have been charged with the murder for Moore’s death. A judge said in April 2006 that they would stand trial.

The case led the Sheriff’s Department to install surveillance cameras throughout the jail.

A hearing Friday established a May 1 hearing followed by a jury trial scheduled for May 11.
