Bakersfield woman federally indicted on false IRS claims

Department of Justice Press Release

Acting United States Attorney Lawrence G. Brown
Eastern District of California
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BAKERSFIELD RESIDENT CHARGED IN FALSE TAX SCHEME

FRESNO, Calif.—Acting United States Attorney Lawrence G. Brown announced today
that a federal grand jury returned a two-count indictment yesterday charging SHONTI N.
CORKER, 25, of Bakersfield, Calif., with presenting false claims against the government.

This case is the product of an extensive investigation by the Internal Revenue Service,
Criminal Investigation Division. According to Assistant United States Attorney Mark J. McKeon, who is prosecuting the case, the indictment alleges that in 2004 and 2005, CORKER filed false tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service claiming large refunds. She claimed an Earned Income Credit, a subsidy for low-income families. In order to qualify for the credit, one must work and earn income.

For the years 2003 and 2004, CORKER submitted tax returns using false W-2 forms that
listed employers she had never worked for, income she had not earned, and withholding tax she had not paid. For the year 2003, she claimed a tax refund of $4,777 and for the year 2004, she claimed a refund of $5,212.

If convicted of this charge, CORKER faces a maximum of five years in prison and a
$250,000 fine. However, the actual sentence will be dictated by the Federal Sentencing
Guidelines, which take into account a number of factors, and will be imposed at the discretion of the court.

The charges are only allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

I've heard/seen some crazy crap the welfare people do BUT to mess with the IRS?  I just think some people would be afraid of prison time but then again, it's a way of life I suppose.

so much welfare fraud and tax return fraud going on its sickening....  our friends are pregnant, and the wife went to 3 month orientation at her ob gyn.  she got a bag of stuff.  inside was a pamphlet about WIC....all in spanish

im telling you...just the tip of the ice berg...theres literally thousands of them here in Kern that do it every year

Hey BNT.... your post calls her Shontin... Are you sure that's not Shonti Nicole?

We have a friend who every year does her taxes and tries to claim her grand children who live with her and who she supports 100%.  Her taxes get kicked back each time because their Baby Daddy who never even sees them has already filed his taxes and claimed them and an earned income credit.  What income?  He has no JOB however he does work closely  interact often with LE.

learnem: I think you are looking for a different metaphor. Two thirds of an iceberg sits under the water, supposedly unseen. Thus, if this case is the 'tip of the iceberg', then there would be a total of three cases in Kern County over the five year period in question.

While that is probably true, I think you don't want to claim it.

History, proportion, references.

You're probably right about the name notatroll.  Found some info on the name you provided.

Her name is indeed Shonti N. Corker... space bar issue.

Dirtyshirt - The use of 'the iceberg' idiom is certainly appropriate here.  The phrase simply means this activity is a small indication of a larger problem; it is not used to identify proportions.

I completly understand where you guys are coming from, but with you saying "the welfare losers all do this" you are wrong. I guess you would consider me to be a welfare loser, but let me tell you I might be on public assistance but I am anything but a loser. I work at a wonderful job were I am able to help families in the community and I am also a full time student who has a 3.50 GPA. I have never tried to work the system at any time, there are people out there who truly need the help of public assistance and take full advantage of all that they have to offer and want to make a better life for their family!

MC549 - if your job is so wonderful, why are you on public asistance?

posted by Lingtaowoo on Jan 16, 2009 at 04:19 PM

There is a thing called ' the working class poor '--some people make just enough to keep a roof over their heads and the lights and heat on...but that's it...still gotta get groceries--to and from work and school...etc.

Not everyone on welfare is trying to get a free ride. If MC549 is going to school and working, then he/she is doing nothing wrong, as long as that person doesn't think that its ok to live on public assistance the rest of their life. Don't get me wrong their are many people who look for free "cash" wether it be through lying on a W-2 or Social Securtiy or welfare.

This is how I was raised, "I don't need it if I can't get it on my own through hard work". I hope that if SHONTI N.
CORKER is really guilty, I hope this person is convicted to full extent. Its not fair or right for the rest of us to pick up CORKER's bill (if you know what I mean).

As soon as I finsih school in the fall I will be able to go off Public Assistance I have to have a degree to make better money. Like I said before I completly understand where you are coming from.I work with families everyday who all they want to do is work the system and its frustrating, but for people to say everyone on welfare is a loser is wrong. You would never know by looking at me that I was on public assistance.

And maybe why you are not getting YOUR HARD EARNED tax refund this year for at least a month is because it is delayed  because of this welfare culture . California is delaying Tax refund checks because the socialist droolers in Sacramento will not cut out any financial aid to primarily Illegal alien families who recieve a majority of their income from making babies who then are U.S. citizens then the parents recieve the assistance. Yet a majority of those Illegal families work under the table yet pay no taxes on that income so they end up making more than most American citizens in low income fields. It is a billion dollar racket that has bankrupted the state. Good job Arnold !

I had WIC for my two youngest children when I was enlisted (and I had a degree).  I don't feel bad for using it (i.e. being a welfare loser).  As a matter of fact, my chain of command encouraged us to use it if we needed it.
