I've heard/seen some crazy crap the welfare people do BUT to mess with the IRS? I just think some people would be afraid of prison time but then again, it's a way of life I suppose. posted by

We have a friend who every year does her taxes and tries to claim her grand children who live with her and who she supports 100%. Her taxes get kicked back each time because their Baby Daddy who never even sees them has already filed his taxes and claimed them and an earned income credit. What income? He has no JOB however he does posted by

learnem: I think you are looking for a different metaphor. Two thirds of an iceberg sits under the water, supposedly unseen. Thus, if this case is the 'tip of the iceberg', then there would be a total of three cases in Kern County over the five year period in question. While that is probably true, I think you don't want to claim it. History, proportion, references. posted by

Dirtyshirt - The use of 'the iceberg' idiom is certainly appropriate here. The phrase simply means this activity is a small indication of a larger problem; it is not used to identify proportions. posted by

I completly understand where you guys are coming from, but with you saying "the welfare losers all do this" you are wrong. I guess you would consider me to be a welfare loser, but let me tell you I might be on public assistance but I am anything but a loser. I work at a wonderful job were I am able to help families in the community and I am also a full time student who has a 3.50 GPA. I have never tried to work the system at any time, there are people out there who truly need the help of public assistance and take full advantage of all that they have to offer and want to make a better life for their family! posted by

Not everyone on welfare is trying to get a free ride. If MC549 is going to school and working, then he/she is doing nothing wrong, as long as that person doesn't think that its ok to live on public assistance the rest of their life. Don't get me wrong their are many people who look for free "cash" wether it be through lying on a W-2 or Social Securtiy or welfare. This is how I was raised, "I don't need it if I can't get it on my own through hard work". I hope that if SHONTI N. posted by

As soon as I finsih school in the fall I will be able to go off Public Assistance I have to have a degree to make better money. Like I said before I completly understand where you are coming from.I work with families everyday who all they want to do is work the system and its frustrating, but for people to say everyone on welfare is a loser is wrong. You would never know by looking at me that I was on public assistance. posted by

And maybe why you are not getting YOUR HARD EARNED tax refund this year for at least a month is because it is delayed because of this welfare culture . California is delaying Tax refund checks because the socialist droolers in Sacramento will not cut out any financial aid to primarily Illegal alien families who recieve a majority of their income from making babies who then are U.S. citizens then the parents recieve the assistance. Yet a majority of those Illegal families work under the table yet pay no taxes on that income so they end up making more than most American citizens in low income fields. It is a billion dollar racket that has bankrupted the state. Good job Arnold ! posted by

I had WIC for my two youngest children when I was enlisted (and I had a degree). I don't feel bad for using it (i.e. being a welfare loser). As a matter of fact, my chain of command encouraged us to use it if we needed it.
