Person falls 20 feet at energy facility

A man fell about 20 feet at a Kern County energy facility and suffered moderate injuries, Kern County firefighters said.

The man fell shortly before noon Monday at the Pastoria Power Plant facility at Tejon Ranch south of Bakersfield. He was helping change the filter inside an air filtration unit when he fell.

A fire crew made contact with the victim who was stabilized before being secured to a backboard. A second fire crew utilized a ladder truck to gain access to the patient from the outside who was still approximately 60 feet from ground level.

The victim was passed through an opening in the façade created by the fire crew and place onto the work platform (basket) of the truck. The patient was brought to ground level with the use of the truck and subsequently transferred to a waiting Medi-Vac helicopter for transport to a local area hospital.

Approximately 13 Kern County Firefighters were deployed to the scene.

Why was this employee allowed to work above 6' without fall protection?

hlden, how do you know he wasn't provided with fall protection?

Wardcleaver - This was not mentioned in the news report. Something as inportant as PPE to prevent serious injury or death I would think would be mentioned in a news story such as this. If anything, to heighten the awarness of  having the right PPE or protection and inspecting items such as fall protection in this case prior to the task. Just thought it was an important factor that was left out of the article.

hiden, just because it wasn't mentioned in a local, brief, news article doesn't mean it wasn't provided. I was just curious how you could make the statement it wasn't provided unless you knew otherwise. But I'm sure the Cal-OSHA investigation will answer that question.

The guy fell 20 feet inside. Inside that intake is three levels. The guy got over heated and got light headed collapsed and fell through the opening for the ladder. There is a gate you have to go through at the top of the ladders but it don't extend all the way to the ground. He went lemp and fell through that opening from what i was told. I was at the plant that night about 6 hours after the accident. Where he was inside it isn't required to have fall protection as there are platforms to work off.
