Case of 10-year-old charged with sex crime closed to media

The case of the 10-year-old Bakersfield boy accused of committing a sexual offense against another child in January will be resolved behind closed doors and out of the public’s eye.

We wanted to cover the case Monday afternoon at the Juvenile Justice Center because it was an extremely rare charge considering the age, officials told us in January. We wanted to know the details of what happened here.  How could a 10-year-old commit a sex crime?

So we asked a judge if we could listen in on the court proceeding. When the boy was called in, the bailiff came out of court and advised me that the judge had denied our request.

A deputy guard at juvenile court with nearly 30 years of experience told me that judges rarely give media permission to cover minor court hearings.

Why? Juvenile privacy laws.

Attorneys and probation officers aren’t allowed to talk about cases involving minors unless they meet a certain criteria. That’s basically if it’s a high-profile crime, as in the Joseph and Dorothy Parrott or Ezequiel Perez murder cases.

Officials are trying to protect everyone’s privacy, especially if there’s a chance the suspects can be rehabilitated, they say.

Now, the case will continue without the public knowing the details of the case and its conclusion.

Although we weren’t allowed inside, I did learn a bit about the case when the attorney called the boy and his uncle aside — right next to where I was sitting (the boy, I would say, was taller and looked older than the average 10-year-old). The next step is for doctor's to do a psychological evaluation on him.

So it seems like this case will never see the light of day. How do you feel about that? Is this a case we need to follow? Or is this a case where justice needs to take its course privately?

IMO this type of case should be kept private. I'm sure the other party wants this under wraps as well - I know I would. There is already too much media in our faces as it is. Give it a rest when it comes to kids. Exception: kids who murder with no reason other then that they could.

Also BNT, I have an almost 10 year old grandson who is already 5' 2" and everybody thinks he is way older then he is. His 14 yr old brother is almost 6'

If they dont keep it private I would think the powers that be would need to be replaced..

I think it should be kept private for many reasons, with a main one seeming to be to deter copycats.  Other children his age may see the press coverage if the case was public and desiring for attention attempt something similar to get their name in the news.  There are enough positive things happening in the community that deserve more attention.

I think my rather sarcastic point is that only perverts would want to hear the details of this case.

So, what are the details?

I think enuff damage has be done to both parties without us knowing any of the details after all if it where to happen to any one of us would we like the public to know about it

The child is only 10 and the victim is probably just as young,  Their identities need to be protected.  Hopefully, the perpetrator can be rehabilitated.  However, if the crime is violent, that it a different story,  The public needs to be protected more than the perps rights,  Example:  Many of you may have forgotten the story of the Kern Co.  Environmental Health Specialist who was first beaten and then later shot and killed along wih her husband and mother,  The murderer had killed his own mother when he was a young child but because of his age his records were sealed.  Had that information been available to Kern law enforcement, perhaps the cold, calculated and brutal murders could have been avoided,

I'm glad sex laws weren't around when I was a kid I don't know how many times I'd have been arrested while playing house.
