CHP ISSUES STATEWIDE SEAT BELT ALERT

SACRAMENTO - To underscore the message that seat belts save lives, California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers statewide plan a one-day campaign to focus their attention on people who do not buckle up when riding in a vehicle.  March 31, 2009, has been designated by the CHP as a “Vehicle Occupant Restraint Day.”

“The goal of this campaign is to stress that seat belts save lives,” said CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow.  “More than 30 percent of all vehicle passengers killed statewide in 2007 and 2008 were not buckled up at the time of the collision.  We hope people will learn from it and take the extra seconds to put on their seat belt or properly restrain their child. There's no do over for someone killed because they failed to buckle up.”

CHP officers on grant-funded overtime, provided by the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), will take to the road specifically looking for violations of seat belt and child safety restraint laws.

According to OTS, seat belt usage by California motorists is at a record high 95.7 percent.  One of the CHP’s primary goals is to raise that number even higher, an effort that will require the public’s cooperation.

In 2008, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) issued 204,187 citations to drivers and passengers who failed to buckle up.  That figure does not include the 17,076 tickets issued for child safety seat violations.  California law requires children younger than age 6 or weighing less than 60 pounds to be properly secured in the back seat.

“We all need to have reminders,” said Commissioner Farrow. “By having the black-and-whites out on the road, we want to educate the public to remind them to wear their seat belts. We all get a little careless sometimes, but in this case, carelessness can be deadly.”

“If you’re unsure about your child’s safety seat or installation, all CHP offices offer free car seat inspection and installation. For more information in the Mojave area, call the CHP at (661) 824-2408 Lt. Leach said.

Money, money, money. I just read an article about how they are cracking down on everything with the express purpose of raising revenue. They just pulled my husband over for tinted windows and for not having a front license plate. The windows are factory and within regulation, as per the judge who heard the case the last time a CHP tax collector tried to collect money for the same tinted windows. Also, this car has NEVER had a front plate and has no place to put one. Safety, my rear.

I agree some of this is about money, But I agree with the seat belt law. I sure wish they would caome to Wasco and watch for the ones who don't use car seats/seat belts for their children. It is about every 3rd car. Something needs to be done.. And Yes as an adult you should have a choice but not as a child.

SO PLEASE COME TO WASCO, AND PROTECT THESE CHILDREN. SINCE IT SEEMS THE PARENTS DO NOT CARE ENOUGH TO PROTECT THEIR OWN.

I agree with the seatbelt law but also agree with the cellphone and text messaging law and not much in happening in that area.

They will only enforce the cell phone law if they can get more than a paltry twenty-five bucks a pop for it. Until then, nothing changes.

I agree about baby car seats, though. Kids do need protection, often from the ignorance of their parents. But the government should not be able to tell a grown person that they MUST wear a seatbelt. That should be a choice.

Thankfully they haven't come after me yet for smoking my Arturo Fuente's in the car after picking up my sister's kids up from daycare.  Poor tykes need a ride home - they can barely walk with their asthma and bronchitis caused by the poor air quality in this city!

I had a ticket several years ago for a factory tinted front window and it was no fix-it ticket either - $160 PLUS I had to pay for a new window.  How can they even sell something here that is illegal?

If they want to make money they should go after the jacked up trucks - isn't there some sort of height limit?  I still see these trucks wobbling all over the road like refrigerators on wheels - it's frightening!  Ticketing them would at least make sense because they pose a safety risk and the rednecks who drive them can afford the tickets with their oilfield income.

erik erik erik...my man....ignorance of the law is no excuse.  if you didnt know that tinted windows, even factory (it wasnt initially sold in the state of ca if it was oem factory tinted, just like no catylitic converter, only in states outside CA) are illegal in CA, well then.......

there is a height limit for how tall a truck can be...it is 54 inches to the center of headlight.Whats the matter Erik?  getting tired of having your hyundai lit up at night like a christmas tree when a truck pulls in behind you with HID's?  lol

Well one of those trucks pulled up to me and I got so *nervous*.  It had those, what do you call it, spinning wheels on it?  I was sitting there listening to the radio, it wasn't turned up loud you know, and I was staring at the wheels cuz they was real shiny, and I saw the wheel spin like it was moving so I gunned my Daewoo into the intersection and was hit by another truck!  Now someone has to help me with this because my insurance doesn't cover this.  In 43 years of driving I ain't never been in no car wreck.  I think I'm going to sue the manufacturer of these wheels because they're deceiving to the eye.
