Fire burns home in Haggin Oaks

Thursday, April 30, 2009 at 0230 hrs. (2:30 a.m. PST) a 3rd alarm response from the Bakersfield FIRE Department and County Fire Dept., consisting of 6 Engines, 3 Trucks, 1 Light Engine, 3 Battalion Commanders, 1 Deputy Chief  and various support units responded to a report of structure fire at 2001 Haggin Oaks. First arriving companies reported heavy fire blowing from the roof of a 5,000 sq. ft.  home. The residents had evacuated the home prior to the fire department’s arrival. The first arriving BFD company officer called for an immediate 2nd alarm response which was upgraded to a 3rd alarm when a Chief Officer arrived. Multiple companies were ordered to enter the home and stop the advance of the fire. Fire had fully engulfed the attic and was now pushing flames 100 ft in the early morning sky.

BFD companies deployed hose lines to the interior, but due to the fire’s intensity, multiple roof collapses threatened firefighters. Salvage was attempted, but much of the home’s contents were destroyed.

Blowing embers driven by wind and fire threatened two large homes adjacent to the fire structure. Protection lines limited damage to a single car parked near the involved home.

BFD arson investigators are on scene determining the cause.

The loss is estimated at $1.1 million with another $2.5 million in property saved.

Check out video of the fire at KBAK's website. How do these guys get video in the middle of the night? Don't they sleep?

How did they save $2.5 million in property?  The place looks like it was hit by a bomb.

I think the 2.5 million saved were the homes that the BFD kept from burning from flying embers.  The involved house was completely destroyed.

Anyone know how it started yet?
