Okay, how many reports are we going to get about intruders coming in unlocked doors before people get the idea to lock their doors and windows. If you're warm, put a window fan or window AC in the window then use one of those window locks that can keep windows from being opened any further. posted by

I think the reader who slammed the husband needs to think before they speak. First of all, they both were awakened to the intruder. Second, the husband is not as big as the intruder was and had no weapon. Third, there were three small children in the house whose safety was also at risk. Fourth, the man had no idea if the intruder was armed or not. Chasing after the intruder could have gotten him killed and/or put his family in further danger. If the reader has never been in that situation they would have no idea of the adrenilin rush or all the thoughts racing through the man's mind. I am sure they will think twice about ever leaving a door or window unlocked, but to think bad thoughts about the husband letting the intruder leave is unwarranted. posted by

I think that wyo1 might know the "husband" very well. Based on the post, it sounds as if the writer is the husband or wife mentioned above. How else would wyo1 know that the husband is smaller than the intruder? posted by

The husband did the right thing; the least amount of violence to safely resolve the issue is the wisest choice. The veteran police officer who shot and killed his own son that had forgot his keys, coming through the basement window, comes to mind. Gunfire, with children in the house, now "that" is questionable. posted by

I have a BIG dog who patrols the outside and a small yapper inside who goes bonkers if anyone comes anywhere near the house. He even rips my mail trying to get at the mail lady when she drops the mail through the slot. I also have a BIG neighbor who also has a dog who lets us know if anyone comes around. I have the best alarms. Not only do they let the world know someone is near, they have big teeth...lol. posted by

The Kern County Kennel has some beautiful large dogs that would be happy to be placed in a home to let the occupants be aware of intruders.

I would have left a .40 diameter hole in the suspect. Would have solved two problems, the current on and the next one he commits. posted by

Have you ever thought that maybe, just maybe the news reporter used a different word to describe the situation? "The husband called out to the subject who then stood up and walked out of the bedroom and the residence." If the man gets caught, the news people can't have tainted our view or he may not get a fair trial. If a man lying on the floor of someone else's bedroom in the middle of the night woke someone up and got "called out to" (You'd think he'd at least get screamed at or yelled at), then probably, he fled or ran or booked it instead of "walk[ing] out of the bedroom and out of the residence". At 2.42am....hmmm...have you ever had a stranger in your bedroom at that time of the night? Many shoulda woulda couldas. How do you know they didn't accidently leave the door unlocked. Have you ever fallen asleep after a day of 3 kids and forgotten to do something. I think everyone should cut the couple some slack. This whole situation seems like everyone's nightmare....and can you imagine how hard it would be to get your kids to sleep after being woken up or hurt by a stranger in their sleep? My own kids are difficult enough to get to sleep "it's too dark...there are monsters...etc." Can you imagine not being able to convince them that there aren't monsters? I think that this situation could've been much worse and I'm glad for that family that they are safe. And PLEASE family, get an alarm or at least lock your doors. And boogie man, PLEASE stop terrorizing people and neighborhoods and freaking the rest of us out!
