If we could just get a handle on the Alcohol, and Drug Use/Abuse in this town, we would stop seeing these kinds of things happening. Certainly we'd see less of it. Once in a while some natural born nutburger might snap, but it would be seldom. You just can't help but think of the children that are touched by this. They are the innocent ones. posted by

lana: my daughter's husband went through a very stressful time and from time to time would mutter something about taking a gun and just "taking care" of both of them. I told her to report this to the police immediately. I also suggested that she call one of those help lines for battered women. I wanted this all on record. I also naturally told her to come back and live with us. Anything besides living with someone who's suicidal and perhaps murderous. I've asked her if he has a gun; she told me no. I hope she wasn't lying about that. Things eventually improved, but I've never trusted him since. It's hard to feel the same way about him that I did before. posted by

Virgil: Do you suppose it might have something to do with other than the air quality? Like, maybe, home and family background? Just maybe? I know you really aren't that flippant about these things. Is it your way of dealing with something that's really nearly incomprehensible? Just curious. posted by

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that Kern County doesn't have a good support system for international industry. If the education system (Colleges) there, would turn out a technologically advanced workforce, the economy would be much stronger and recession resistant. The standard of living would be higher because related industries would be drawn to the area, creating more higher paying jobs. I'm not just talking corporate positions, but also high technology manufacturing that requires skilled tradesmen like machinests and CNC modeling and programming. People with some education and stable employment feel a lot less stress and "Bug Out" on their family a lot less often. With a low cost of living and an employment base that draws low skill level workers into things like agriculture and oil, Kern County seems to draw people who can't seem make it in other areas of the region. I think Bakersfield has a high occurrence of this stuff because its industries and economy draw potential participants from other places. Take a poll. See just how many of these people are from parents who were born and raised in Kern County. My prediction is that it will produce a surprising outcome. posted by

Answer honestly, because I'm just trying to figure out where you're coming from with your comments. I was born and raised there, but I don't currently live there. My family is still there and I own quite a bit of real estate there. I come home to visit about four times a year, and have for many years. I have many friends there, that I've known all my life. A lot of your comments make no sense to me, even though I'm aware of everything that you seem to allude to. posted by

"It also happens to be one of the most egregiously corrupt places I have ever had the pleasure of living and working in." I'm sorry you feel that way. Although it isn't anywhere close to perfect, I've actually lived ant worked in more corrupt places. I'll start with the whole state of Virginia. It's totally rediculus there. Where else can you pay tax, ontop of tax, ontop of tax? Buy a set of tires there and see what I mean. The city of Memphis is way more corrupt than Bakersfield, so is Detroit or Chicago. I'll admit that California is probably the most screwed up state that I've ever lived in, or tried to do business in. I'd really like to move back when I retire, and take up my retirement business. So far, it doesn't make sense because of the hostile environment towards small business. I'd love to move back and generate a few new jobs. Maybe things will change in the next ten years and it'll be a little more friendly for me. posted by

Thanks Virgil, for at least discussing it with me. I believe that it has a lot to do with the local industry and economy. Why do you think it's the cheapest place to live in California? The local economy will only support a certain cost/standard of living. If local government and education systems would band together with a common plan, they could lift (over time) the local workforce from fruit pickers to high technology machinists, solid model computer designers, Mechanical Engineers and the like. This workforce, along with a little marketing, would draw recession-resistant industry into the area. The current industry draws what, fruit pickers, truck drivers, Ag /oil workers? This is Nobel, but it's very cyclical in nature. High Technology is much more adaptable as things change. That's what makes it so recession resistant. Bakersfield has good Learning institutions. They just need to build a common plan with the cooperation of local Government. The local economy could be totally transformed. posted by

There is nothing I'd like more than for Kern County to transform itself into something like Warsaw, Indiana. It's a great place, it's home and I'd love to see it transform and thrive in the new millennium of this global economy. <EDIT> Our country is severely missing the production of goods to be sold. If a community wants to be indipensible, they need to producing goods that can't easily be produced by others. Not only will this stategy produce a solid local economy, it'll also help our great nation with GDP. posted by

A start would be to teach them something that they can see, will earn them a decent living when they finish. As a kid there, I had no idea what professions/trades were available, except for what was available in the local job market. I got lucky. I worked for a Man who had been around and explained a few things to me. I then spent time in the Navy and actually saw what he said for myself. I was 17 years old before I knew what a Mechanical Engineer was. Now, I've been one for over 20 years. See what I mean? See what Kern County is missing? I grew up thinking that my options were "School Teacher", "Oil Field Worker", "Farm Employee" (my family wasn't into farming, so I knew I couldn't be a Farmer. Couldn't afford to buy the land), Mechanic. Growing up in Kern County, with the associated economy and education system, my exposure was limited. I had to leave that great valley to actually experience life. posted by

I stable my horse at the recently deceased horse stables . I can assure you that this incident was not a product of the recent economy . this tragedy was the result of a very mentally ill man and the pooor job of the DA s Office. This man who recently in the last 3 months was in the news for a attempted suicide that involved sheriff officers having to tazer the man to subdue him. this suicide left this man mentally unstable. Any person could see that after this man had put a hole in his head that he should have been committed. A restraining order was put in place to protect the recently deceased. After many death threats and extreme vandalism committed against Annette's stables committed by her ex husband the DAs office refused to press charges on a restraining order violation, that was put in place to protect her life along with her children .last week was one of the last incident , He was picked up and arrested the officers told Annette he would not be let out a couple days later he was let out and the following week she and her mother are dead and quit possibly the children could have been killed. I would Like to thank Mr. Jagles for his service this i believe may be the 3rd death to a woman by her abusive spouse where the restraining order was not enforced and violations prosecuted in the lat 15 years. How many of you remember the man who camped out under his ex wife's house and stabbed her to death. Poor enforcement and prosecution was a factor there to. I ask that people pray for the children that they will come through on this profound loss. posted by

My condolences to the family. This is such a tragedy. Truly heartbreaking. Tonyh...You do raise some valid points. I was born and raised in Kern County, and I agree that the local job market has not encouraged residents to explore many options other than what you described. One other career choice that you didn't mention, and is probably the foremost option in this area, is the Department of Corrections. We are inundated with prisons in the Central Valley, and I believe this has contributed to the rise in violence and corruption that we are experiencing.

Tony, the CSUB president made a speech last year about trying to add a computer engineering degree at CSUB, but I would imagine those plans have been shelved given the massive budget cuts the CSU system received this year. Any attempts to expand educational options won't be happening any time soon with the current budget climate. The CSU as a whole actually plans to decrease enrollment over the next several years to deal with projected budget deficits. posted by

Another FINE example of the DA's office more specifically EDWARD JAGLES protecting the people, heaven forbid he do His job. Not to long ago he was asked then begged to keep his buddy and assistant DA away from a former DA's office investigator's son (HILLIS). He was so very close to that situation and still did NOTHING and now two people are DEAD that needn't be but those families are deeply hurt. So what would lead any of us in this town to think that people that he does not know he would give a rats A** about. A lot of things have been said on this blog blaming Bakersfield for the high rate of shootings. The reality is that the majority of the shootings have nothing to do with family disturbances and Kern County has nothing to do with the murders. I'm not picking of Pete but this comment is typical of things said here... "Why do so many people attack their family members in this town?" Until recently Fresno had a higher murder rate than Bakersfield. Los Angeles had murders on a daily basis. Comment like Pete make it sound like we have the corner on this kind of crime when in actuality it happens all over the country on a regular basis. We just don't hear about it because it's not in our line of sight. It's always in the news from somewhere about a mom or dad killing the spouse and all their children...it happens way too often and not just here. I'm sorry, this will hit some of you wrong but I'm fed up with comments like that. It's an ignorant thing to say and I make no apology for calling out those of you who keep saying it. If I had the inclination tonight I'd round up a bunch of stories from all over and share them with you but since you have such a low opinion of Bakersfield and Kern County, it would be pointless. Yeah..this is a corrupt county..the only one around..the rest of the country is blameless. Well, except maybe Chicago (Blago) and a few others. But hey, lets just ignore reality..bashing Bakersfield is much more fun. And by the way..this is nothing new. One of my family members niece was shot dead on her front porch by her estranged husband and that was over 20 years ago. She couldn't get a restraining order even though the guys own sister begged them..and Jagels was NOT the DA then.

I think that it's important for many of you to know that Annette and "Alici" (cherokee for Grandma)as we knew her, were extremely wonderful people. Annette was a hard worker doing everything she could to give her two little girls the best possible life. Annette and her ranch had been under attack ever since she had filed for divorce, things just kept getting worse and worse. I mean seriously how many times does some have to break a restraining order and vandalize your property before police really start to listen... Here's the thing, the guy tried to kill himself and was unsuccessful, he became even more mentally ill, and the county releases him from the mental institute, because they wanted to save money, well now look what we have, two people gone, two little girls without parents, not to mention the mental damages incurred on them from witnessing the murder of their Mother and Alici, and now the guys going to jail, probably for the rest of his life, so how did that help, or save any money???? IT DIDNT !! and now to little girls who have already been through so much have to go through so much more. It's so sad to think this all could have been prevented, but oh no, money comes into play, and it doesn't matter the consequences. Annette and Alici took my family and I in as if they had known us for ever, seemed to be a family trait in Annette's family for that, I was and am blessed for the opportunity to have known these wonderful people. . Please pray for these two little girls... posted by

Nancy, I heard a theory that held btown is only the beginning for would be waste of flesh criminals and drug dealers - kinda like a gateway. Btown still has social workers neglecting to ask the where abouts of two young children until they are found in a local storage unit, stuffed in cardboard containers. It's also the place the where the assistant District Attorney can follow a young boy ( to the knowledge of most everyone in the local law enforcement scene ) around exploiting his addiction to methamphetamine in exchange for sexual favors. --virgil Advertisement |
