Robbery suspect arrested after shots fired

Date:  Saturday, September 05, 2009
Time:  9:42:17 PM

Kern County Sheriff's deputies captured a man they believe fired a gunshot into an occupied car and robbed two at Pioneer Park on Saturday night.

No one was hurt when the man allegedly robbed a man of his car keys, then accosted a second male sitting in a car and demanded his wallet before firing once into the vehicle, deputies said in a release.

At about 8 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the east Bakersfield park in on a report of a possible robbery with shots fired.

Deputies located two different victims. The first told deputies he was sitting on a park bench when the suspect approached, brandished a handgun and demanded his valuables. The suspect took the victim's cars keys and told him to leave the area, according to the release.

The suspect then approached a second victim in the park who was sitting in his vehicle. The suspect demanded his valuables but the victim did not comply immediately. The suspect fired one shot into the vehicle and the second victim gave the suspect his wallet. The second victim said he saw the suspect get into the first victim’s vehicle, shoot his gun into the air and flee the area. No one was injured in either incident.

A deputy in the area spotted a person nearby who matched the suspect’s description and he attempted to stop him. The suspect ran with the deputy pursuing him. During the foot pursuit, the suspect discarded a 9mm handgun and other property which has been identified as belonging to the victims, deputies said.

The suspect was located and detained. He has been identified as Adam Vargas, 22 of Bakersfield. Vargas was arrested on suspicion of two counts of robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, and auto theft.

I was in that area visiting friends on the East Side, about a block away from the park,  when this went down.

I heard the gunshots and saw a commotion around the park.  I didn't know what was going on at the time but it was very disconcerting hearing the shots and seeing the Sheriff response - yet not having a clue to what was going on.

Had I known, I would have left for home immediately to avoid this dangerous situation.

Pat yourself on the back Kern County Sheriff's Department!  You did great catching this stupid idiot and getting him off our streets.  We don't need these type of people running around.

Sorry to say but this could have been prevented. This POS was in custody back in Jan for 12031 criminal street gang member carrying a loaded firearm (you guessed it, dismissed for the furtherment of justice AS USUAL), Possesion of a firearm within 10 years of conviction (plead no contest), & Participation in a street gang (plead no contest). He did 49 days total & paid $300. When is this junk going to end? almost every case this year involving a gang or a gun has this stupid "dismissed for the furtherment of justice" DA do your damn job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JMABBOTT888......you almost got it right, this scumbag only served 33 days, got 16 days for good behavior.......total 49 days. Wake up Kern County, our S.O. bust their butts and our D.A. lets them go. People we have to get rid of Jagles and company. This is not anything new with his office, it goes on everyday, unless it is his ex-wife.

And just think, this punk is only 22 years old. Do you think that this guy will ever serve any good to the people of this Country.........HELL NO except making license plates and Jagles needs to be right next to this and so many more from Kern County.

It has been my thought  that we should get rid of Jagels for years as I don't believe that he is effective as a DA.
