The Bakersfield police have released a photo of Officer Dennis Eddy receiving a donation to a fund set up to help him and his family deal with his injuries.
Eddy had part of his leg amputated last week, after being wounded in a shoot out with a gang member earlier this month.
The donation was from the Choir Boys Motorcycle Club, a group of active and retired law enforcement officers who are dedicated to the support of families of law enforcement officers who are injured or killed in the...
Rowdy the Roadrunner was kidnapped sometime after a CSUB men's basketball game on Feb. 22.
The official mascot of CSUB athletics since the 1998-99 season, Rowdy was last seen in a dressing room at Rabobank Arena, said Karen Langston, CSUB Director of Sales and Marketing.
A $500 reward is being offered for the return of the costume -- no questions asked.
Anyone with information on Rowdy's whereabouts is asked to call Langston at 654-6226 or e-mail her at klangston@csub.edu.
A contractor fell into a manhole today in south Bakersfield.
As expected, the breaking news team responded and brought along our video and still camera. Capt. Bryan Perry graciously offered to take some pictures up close and turned in some pretty good photos.
Check them out.
Here's the 911 call reporting that a 4-year-old had been kidnapped Sunday afternoon.
A motor home caught on fire Thursday morning on HIghway 58 east of General Beale Road, according to the California HIghway Patrol.
Black smoke came from the eastbound vehicle and a lane of the highway was closed at about 10:30 a.m., the CHP said. The road reopened about two hours later.
Reader Don Risner took pictures of the fire.
As we noted on the Bakosphere blog, KBAK is reporting that police are investigating Robert Rodriguez in the unsolved kidnapping and death of Jessica Martinez. Rodriguez was nabbed recently when he tried to kidnap a 4-year-old girl.
This got the Breaking News Team juices going. We made some calls and it turns out that this item appears to be wrong.
Bakersfield police Sgt. Greg Terry says at this point there is no link whatsoever between the two cases. He acknowledged there were some...
The Sheriff's Department is warning folks about recent license plate thefts. Anyone out there actually had their plates or tags stolen? I always thought the "people will steal your registration tags" was an old wives tale.
Nice thing is you can get special screws for your plates for free that will apparently vex any would be thieves.

The Bakersfield police will be holding a DUI checkpoint starting at 6 p.m. tonight, so make sure you don't drink and drive folks (not that you should do it when they don't have a checkpoint!)
They haven't said where it will be, so you can't plan some alternate route. They could be ANYWHERE within city limits.
My question: Who is drunk by 6 p.m. on Friday?
Want to write a letter or send a get well card to Officer Dennis Eddy, who was shot in the chest and leg recently?

Bakersfield is getting a Famous Dave's rib joint in a few days. The grand opening is on Monday and will be celebrated by the fire chief, mayor and "Wilbur" the company pig.
According to the attached press release the mayor and fire chief will show up in a ladder truck and will help with the formal "rib cutting." All in front of 200 "Totally pumped up" employees.
The proceeds of the event are apparently going to the local Salvation Army.

A classified ad prankster struck The Bakersfield Californian.
Rory Emerald, known for placing fake ads in newspapers around the country, placed a classified ad in The Californian in January that said he found Merle Haggard’s peace pipe and his private record collection.
About 150 people have called about the ad, according to Emerald who was born Julian Lee Hobbs. When someone would call the Los Angeles phone number on the ad, Emerald would tell them it was a hoax.
Emerald, a...
Yesterday we had a story about someone who had their sago palms stolen from their yard.
Now we've got a story about an Oildale woman who had two pit bull puppies stolen from her back yard.
So what have you had stolen? Anything from your yard?
I had some packages taken by my neighbors when I lived in a shady apartment complex. But nothing that required bringing a shovel or a leash.
--Davin McHenry, Breaking News team leader
The other day about 60 inmates at Lerdo Jail got a little tipsy on some home made booze and decided to have a rumble.
That got the Breaking News Team wondering, what does this home made hooch -- called Pruno -- really taste like. We even threw out the idea of making our own batch and tasting it on video for you. We're THAT dedicated to you our readers and breaking news.
Then I looked up how its actually made. That quickly ended any chance of us actually trying this stuff. I mean the final...
