It was five years ago this month when Glenn Maurice Johnson was first convicted of murder in the shooting death of Lamar Rufus.
But that conviction was tossed in 2004 when an appeals court found the jury did not receive proper instructions on the law.
The following year, Johnson was again convicted of the same crime — driving the getaway car in support of a gun killing in south Bakersfield.
But once again, his...

There is an interesting story on the LA Times site today that says the LAPD officers union has complained about the police chief's comment that women should be allowed in SWAT.
The story doesn't say exactly what the union's beef is. It does say the LAPD SWAT has some gruelling physical standards, and that those standards are being changed, possibly to make it easier for women to make the team.
It raises an interesting question: Should women be allowed on SWAT? Should the physical standards...
The sump where Zane Newton died Wednesday is one of nearly 340 owned by the city of Bakersfield. And they have to be secured by a 6-foot-tall fence, officials said.
But despite Zane's accident, the city doesn't plan to go inspect all 340 for holes in fences or broken chain locks, according to city water resources manager Florn Core.
Is that wise, especially in light of lawsuits families have filed against the city when their child has died on city property like the Park at Riverwalk or the...

Actor Thomas Jane was busted in Kern County for DUI this morning as he zoomed down I5 in his Mazerati. Apparently he also got dinged for driving on a suspended license. The scoop apparently goes to TMZ.com.

You meet the most interesting people while covering the court beat for a daily newspaper: murderers, rapists, home-invasion robbers — lawyers.
All lawyer jokes aside, attorneys perform a difficult and often thankless role that nevertheless remains absolutely critical in a free society. In that sense, attorneys are not so different from news reporters ... we're often hated but oh so necessary.
Which brings me to an issue that arose in Kern County Superior Court today, an issue that may...
We've got a great story about a pair of Marine buddies who hadn't seen each other in 50 years. They reconnected yesterday when Pete Petersen, 78, of Clayton, Wis. flew into Bakersfield to meet Richard Culley, 70.
That got me thinking about who I would want to reconnect with. I'm not nearly as old as these guys, but I've got some friends from school I would like to see again.
Who would you like to track down?
I value accuracy, even more than I love a great story. That's because a story can no longer be great if it's shown to be inaccurate.
Accuracy is so important The Californian chooses to publish corrections on the front page. It's a statement about our priorities.
Reporters are human. Mistakes will happen. But when it's your mistake, it hurts. Like getting gut-punched.

A staffer at The Californian got a call from it on his cell phone Thursday night.
He's not the only person. Lots of people have been getting called on their cell phones by this number. And they're writing about it here.
Have you gotten a call? What happened when you answered? When you called back?
Isn't it a bit odd that cell phones are being called?
Since accused murderer Yvette Davila is a former local we've probably focused more on her than on Tim and Randi Miller, the couple Davila is accused of killing.
We're planning to remedy that in tomorrow's newspaper. For now, here's a pretty long story about the pair from the Laconia newspaper on the Millers.

The Tacoma paper is also doing some good blogging on the case.
Yesterday's top story was on a car crash on Highway 58, where a guy missed the end of the freeway and barrelled into the parking lot at the Wild West Shopping center.
What really surprised us is that the wreck got more interest online than the memo outlining a plot to ambush a sheriff's deputy and a story on the local woman who allegedly killed a couple in Washington state.
Now, all of our accident stories seem to do rather well online. And this is an interesting situation. But these kinds...
Looks like the Bakersfield Police Department has gotten a grant that will allow them, in part, to install some surveillance cameras in the community to watch gang members.
I know surveillance cameras are nothing new. Wal-Mart has them in the parking lot. And if you go to London, apparently they're everywhere.
And don't think I'm pro-gang. I kinda like the idea of keeping an eye on them. And the cameras in London apparently came in handy when terrorists attacked.
But at the same time it's...

West High grad Yvette Davila is making news for allegedly shooting and killing a couple in Washington state.
There is some interesting blogging going on about this case and we've tracked down the MySpace pages for Yvette, and victims Timothy Miller and Randi Miller.
