At one point, we responded to a fight between two girls at Chipman Junior HIgh School. The fight was over one girl talking smack about the friend of the other girl, saying she wished the friend had gotten hurt worse in a recent traffic accident. The smack talking girl had scratches on her face from the rings of the girl who pulled her...

BY STEVEN MAYER Californian staff writer e-mail: smayer@bakersfield.com It was five years ago this month when Glenn Maurice Johnson was first convicted of murder in the shooting death of Lamar Rufus. But that conviction was tossed in 2004 when an appeals court found the jury did not receive proper instructions on the law. The following year, Johnson was again convicted of the same crime — driving the getaway car in support of a gun killing in south Bakersfield. But once again, his...

The Shafter High School teacher accused of trying to make methamphetamine in his school chemistry lab pleaded not guilty today at an arraignment in Kern County Superior Court. The defendant, Jeff Ryan Scheidemantel, was arraigned on two felony counts, even though a judge earlier this month found that there was not enough evidence to sustain a charge of manufacturing methamphetamine. At a preliminary hearing March 11, Judge Eugene L. Huseman dismissed the manufacturing charge but did find...

There is an interesting story on the LA Times site today that says the LAPD officers union has complained about the police chief's comment that women should be allowed in SWAT. The story doesn't say exactly what the union's beef is. It does say the LAPD SWAT has some gruelling physical standards, and that those standards are being changed, possibly to make it easier for women to make the team. It raises an interesting question: Should women be allowed on SWAT? Should the physical standards...

The sump where Zane Newton died Wednesday is one of nearly 340 owned by the city of Bakersfield. And they have to be secured by a 6-foot-tall fence, officials said. But despite Zane's accident, the city doesn't plan to go inspect all 340 for holes in fences or broken chain locks, according to city water resources manager Florn Core. Is that wise, especially in light of lawsuits families have filed against the city when their child has died on city property like the Park at Riverwalk or the...

You may not know it, but you can see a map of all crimes that have taken place in your neighborhood for the past week or so. You can even see a map of every call to police from your neighborhood. The Bakersfield Police Department puts up these maps, which include the latest data from the day before. They aren't the easiest maps to work with, but if you're curious to know what that siren was the other night or why a street was blocked off by cops, this is a good source.

Actor Thomas Jane was busted in Kern County for DUI this morning as he zoomed down I5 in his Mazerati. Apparently he also got dinged for driving on a suspended license. The scoop apparently goes to TMZ.com. Don't know who Thomas Jane is? (I didn't) He apparently was in The Punisher and more recently The Mist. Want to look him up in the courts calendar for yourself? His real name is apparently Thomas Elliot III. -- Davin McHenry, Breaking News team

You meet the most interesting people while covering the court beat for a daily newspaper: murderers, rapists, home-invasion robbers — lawyers. All lawyer jokes aside, attorneys perform a difficult and often thankless role that nevertheless remains absolutely critical in a free society. In that sense, attorneys are not so different from news reporters ... we're often hated but oh so necessary. Which brings me to an issue that arose in Kern County Superior Court today, an issue that may...

We've got a great story about a pair of Marine buddies who hadn't seen each other in 50 years. They reconnected yesterday when Pete Petersen, 78, of Clayton, Wis. flew into Bakersfield to meet Richard Culley, 70. That got me thinking about who I would want to reconnect with. I'm not nearly as old as these guys, but I've got some friends from school I would like to see again. Who would you like to track down?

I value accuracy, even more than I love a great story. That's because a story can no longer be great if it's shown to be inaccurate. Accuracy is so important The Californian chooses to publish corrections on the front page. It's a statement about our priorities. Reporters are human. Mistakes will happen. But when it's your mistake, it hurts. Like getting gut-punched. In recent weeks, the last name of the victim in a murder trial, Marco Antonio Gutierrez, was misspelled in several stories...

The Bakersfield Police Department has started their own videocast. Chief Bill Rector does a quick welcome video and then they've got pieces on the reserves and neighborhood watch. Being the guy who was in charge of online video for more than two years here at The Californian I can appreciate the work that these kinds of videos require. So they've got to be dedicating some manpower to shooting and editing these things. You can see the videos at their special page (windows only), on YouTube...

I got a call today from Ron Langsworthy, 73, who says he's been a friend of Terry Phillip Hagar, the man who died trying to save a dog from traffic on Rosedale Highway. We ran a short piece on Hagar and the reaction to his actions yesterday, saying we couldnt find out much about him. Langsworthy says he knew Hagar for 20 years and considered him "like a son." Apparently the dog, a mixed pug, belonged to Hagar and was named Pug-a-poo. Langsworthy said he gave Hagar the dog and...

I have one question for the media in general!  Why do we always focus on nothing but the bad. I have read the announcements of the BIG RIG "Fiery accident" on February 26th 2008 at approximately 1:30pm!   Please listen to how it affected me?   To make a long story short....  I am a ER Registered Nurse who was with his friends traveling to Las Vegas for three nights!  I am from Visalia and of course had to take the 58 east towards my destination....

Phillip Terry Hagar , 45, was trying to save a dog on Rosedale Highway west of Fairhaven Drive when he was hit by a car and killed. The dog died, too. Here's the full story on Bakersfield.com. Was this heroism or something else?

A staffer at The Californian got a call from it on his cell phone Thursday night. He's not the only person. Lots of people have been getting called on their cell phones by this number. And they're writing about it here. Have you gotten a call? What happened when you answered? When you called back? Isn't it a bit odd that cell phones are being called?

Since accused murderer Yvette Davila is a former local we've probably focused more on her than on Tim and Randi Miller, the couple Davila is accused of killing. We're planning to remedy that in tomorrow's newspaper. For now, here's a pretty long story about the pair from the Laconia newspaper on the Millers. (Don't know what I'm talking about? Been on the moon? Check out the links on this story.) The Tacoma paper is also doing some good blogging on the case.

Yesterday's top story was on a car crash on Highway 58, where a guy missed the end of the freeway and barrelled into the parking lot at the Wild West Shopping center. What really surprised us is that the wreck got more interest online than the memo outlining a plot to ambush a sheriff's deputy and a story on the local woman who allegedly killed a couple in Washington state. Now, all of our accident stories seem to do rather well online. And this is an interesting situation. But these kinds...

Looks like the Bakersfield Police Department has gotten a grant that will allow them, in part, to install some surveillance cameras in the community to watch gang members. I know surveillance cameras are nothing new. Wal-Mart has them in the parking lot. And if you go to London, apparently they're everywhere. And don't think I'm pro-gang. I kinda like the idea of keeping an eye on them. And the cameras in London apparently came in handy when terrorists attacked. But at the same time it's...

Jeff Ryan Scheidemantel, the Shafter High School teacher accused of trying to make methamphetamine at a school lab, has declined the offer of a plea deal, said Deputy District Attorney Cecil "Bud" Starr. The offer was for a maximum of two years in state prison, but it would have given the judge the discretion to impose a much lighter sentence, Starr said Wednesday. Scheidemantel faces felony charges of manufacturing meth and possession with the intent to manufacture meth. Search...

Deleting embarrassing stuff from your computer hard drive doesn’t mean it’s really gone. Just ask Gary Dale Myers Jr., the 30-year-old Bakersfield man accused in the Samurai sword murder of Marco Antonio Guiterrez. Myers’ jury trial continued Tuesday in Kern County Superior Court featuring testimony from Thomas Fugitt, a computer forensic technician for the Kern County Sheriff’s Department who is an expert at searching computers for evidence and other stuff you...

We got a copy of an internal memo from the Sheriff's Department that outlines a pretty scary plot to attack (and presumeably kill) a local police officer or deputy in retaliation for the shooting of Leon Anderson Jr.

West High grad Yvette Davila is making news for allegedly shooting and killing a couple in Washington state. There is some interesting blogging going on about this case and we've tracked down the MySpace pages for Yvette, and victims Timothy Miller and Randi Miller. Davila's MySpace is set to private, but this blog post has gleaned some info using cached versions, including some distinctly MySpaceish photos.

Samurai swords, meth-smokers, blood spatters — who needs Court TV when you live in Kern County? The first-degree murder trial of 30-year-old Gary Dale Myers Jr. began last week and continued Monday in Kern County Superior Court. Myers is accused of using a Samurai sword to inflict multiple and fatal injuries on 26-year-old Marco Antonio Guiterrez on March 8, 2005. Last week, Judge Clarence Westra Jr. ruled that a 911 tape containing the emotional voice of Melissa Splain,...
