Apparently the Austrian man who imprisoned his daughter for 24 years, raped her repeatedly and fathered seven children with her could face just 15 years in prison thanks to Europe's more relaxed attitude towards crime and punishment. Now the Austrian guy is in his 70s, so that's probably a life sentence. But still, 15 years?! That's less than the twisted prison sentence he handed down to his daughter and some of those kids. I know folks complain a bit about our justice system, but right now...

Jason,    I am sending this e-mail as an update on information regarding Petty  Officer 1st Class Morton. I'm hoping that it will also help to clarify  some discrepancies that have appeared in news reports...    In your last e-mail to me, you asked me to confirm that NC1 Morton was  from Bakersfield. It appears that although she was born in Rockford,  Illinois and graduated high school there, she later claimed her "home  town" as...

I spent part of a day last week driving around with officers from the vice unit as they busted prostitutes working along Union Avenue and V Street. Four prostitutes were arrested in about an hour, and several others were seen working the streets. "Pretty Woman" it's not. Most of these girls are drug addicts and some are homeless or spend their time going from one dingy motel to the next night after night. One of the prostitutes said she started using drugs at 12 and began...

Kevin Johnson will likely die, his sister said. The father of four was allegedly hit in the neck from behind by suspect Matthew Reed during Saturday’s Festival of Beers in Stramler Park, witnesses said. Reed ran off after he hit Johnson. The two men had a longstanding feud over a guitar. Right now, Johnson is on life support at San Joaquin Hospital, according a story by Steve Swenson, and the family is making arrangements to donate his heart before the life support machine is...

Last week I talked with a retired California Highway Patrol officer who has been conducting his own investigation into a murder that happened 41 years ago. He's long been interested in the case and just can't get it out of his head. The victim, Dominga Montoya, a secretary to then-Assemblyman Kent Stacey, was bludgeoned to death in a laundromat on Niles Street. Apparently the killing received quite a bit of publicity at the time and there was even an arrest, but no charges were filed and it...

George Orozco Jr. didn't want to be talk about his brother in front of a camera. In Saturday's story about 1st Lt. Osbaldo Orozco death in Iraq five years ago and how his family has gone through since then, George opened his heart. I didn't expect him to say much, but one story about "Baldo" finding a floating dead horse in a reservoir turned into another story about Osbaldo's fascination with the movie, "The Program." A planned 15 minute interview turned into an hour....

Steven Mayer has a piece on the District Attorney's office cracking down on kids who skip school repeatedly. They got the juvenile court judge to let the media in today and watch three girls get sentenced to a weekend in stir for skipping school. So what do you think? Should we lock up kids that just don't bother going to school? To be clear, these aren't kids who have missed one day. They're repeat offenders who have already been to court previously -- and they still skipped school. I...

When I first started reading this story by Jorge Barrientos I got a chill. I don't know how many times I've started the dryer and left the house. This woman came back to find a fire, started by the dryer, had burned down her house. Of course I eventually got to the part where she didn't have a pipe running from the dryer to the outside of the house, it was just blowing lint around in her laundry room. -- Davin McHenry A two-alarm fire that destroyed a home Wednesday afternoon in southeast...

Bakersfield police are stepping up enforcement efforts against motorcyclists and looking for anyone driving recklessly or otherwise committing traffic violations that could lead to a crash. Five people have died in crashes involving motorcycles since September 2007. Should police be going after motorcyclists and are they inherently more reckless drivers than others on the road? One of those killed was 25-year-old motorcyclist Jared Brown after the driver of a van struck him and left the...

William Logan knows how to act as a prisoner, but not so much as a boyfriend. At a Tehachapi ranch in September, a man came up to Logan's car and smacked Logan on the side of the face with a handgun as Logan was in the driver's seat. The gun accidentally went off and the bullet killed Logan's girlfriend, 36-year-old Michelle Cross. This came out in the murder  trial of David Bruce Rosenberg, a friend and crime partner of Logan's. But Logan, wearing orange prison clothes because he's...

As I was on my way to talk to Justin Ennis in the downtown jail Saturday about the murder charge he is in for, the correctional officer who escorted me said, "I can't believe this guy is talking to you people (news media)." Ennis proceeded to tell me how he was framed for the Thursday night killing of Lora Shine in south Bakersfield. The story ended with how he would like to get some legal help so he didn't incriminate himself. What with finding her dead, taking some time to...

I reported on the Warbirds in Action Air Show at Minter Field today. While it was interesting to watch the planes swoop through the air and talk to the pilots, it was also cool to see such a wide array of people at the show, everyone from 80-year-old vets to toddlers. It was my first time at the show and I'd like to hear from others who attended. What did you think and what were your favorite parts? --Jason Kotowski

I was at court today covering the case of Tommy Vicente Valenzuela, who is charged with second-degree murder in a Feb. 14 drunk driving crash. A woman was killed and three other people suffered major injuries in the collision. It seemed like a pretty standard case. But after the court hearing, a family member of one of the victims said Valenzuela had killed someone in a crash a few years ago. I looked up court records and, sure enough, he pleaded no contest to a hit-and-run that killed an...

Jason Kotowski has a wild story about a late night melee at a Planz Road mini market last night. Seems two men went into the store and started pocketing candy bars. When the clerk confronted them, one of the men punched him in the face. Then things got crazy. Police say the two suspects started trashing the place. They pulled a knife on a customer -- who is a friend of the clerk -- and tried to escape in their car, police said. The clerk and his friend didn't let them off that easy. They...

Steve E. Swenson has a good little story today on a local neighborhood that's trying to help solve its crime problems. Seems the Stonecreek neighborhood in the south part of town has seen quite a bit of vandalism, graffiti, theft, etc. Neighbors are so sick of it that they pooled $3,000 to offer for rewards. Problem is they can't find anyone to actually oversee the rewards. Apparently the Secret Witness program wants to reserve their tipline for more serious crimes. There may be a solution...

The Bakersfeld Police Department SWAT team was called out this morning to southwest Bakersfield but the incident ended peacefully when the shooting suspect surrendered to police. Bakersfield Fire Department officials closed off M Street between 34th and 36th streets at about 1:30 p.m. Monday to investigate two buckets of liquid that turned out to be “old stinky water” and pesticide, officials said. Fire officials with a Hazmat unit shut down the block after city workers cleaning in the area broke one of the buckets in a backyard shed, Battalion Chief Ken Wiggins said. A quarter-gallon bucket of pesticide emitted a “pungent odor,” he said....

So I have an old car that I work on and drive to work sometimes. Several months back I was driving to work and smelled a strong odor of gasoline. When I got to work I popped the hood and discovered a leaky fuel line had spilled gas all over the top of the engine. So I got a cheap little fire extinguisher and mounted it in the trunk,...

This is a story on how we get our news. Last week, I got a tip that the Golden West Casino suspects had been tried before in another state — the tipster said Arkansas — and acquitted. Well, that should be easy to find out. I went to Google. Nothing. I went to Associated Press in Arkansas. Nothing. I went to Google News. Nothing. I went to Yahoo. Nothing.
