The defense in the murder case against Wayne Perkins and Anthony Jones stressed to the jury in their arguments  Wednesday that key witness Torino Jackson wasn’t credible enough to convict anyone. Okay, this intrigues me. The question two reputed gang members asked another man in south Bakersfield was Watts up? The man to his subsequent demise replied, "Watts up." It's not that these guys can't spell. It's that Watts refers to Watts Drive which is in the heart of Country Boy Crips territory. Those asking the quested are reputed East Side Crips gang members. By asking the Watts question, they were trying to confirm the other guy was Country, and not in a twangy way. When...

A story in today's paper highlights certain electronic privileges inmates have. Some people say restricting inmates from accessing these electronics makes a bad situation worse. It's no way to rehabilitate people because when they re-enter society, they have a tougher time adjusting. But others say inmates in prisons should be held...

The pickup they were driving in went out of control on Washington Street for reasons still unknown and hit a guardrail, sending it airborne. The pickup then flew into the freeway where it barreled into a big rig carrying two trailers. We received a call from the driver’s wife and the big rigs company spokeswoman who said they were disappointed in the coverage and details of the crash. Jennifer...

It was a blisteringly hot day in August 2001 when I covered the last major theft from the sheriff's department property room. I remember clearly standing outside the property building, which is downtown, and listening to then-Sheriff Carl Sparks talk about losing a kilo of cocaine and quarter-pound of meth. Sparks, who was a very good public speaker, was basically apologetic in his tone. According to the sheriff's department, the missing drugs were never found and they still don't know...

The LA Times did a story on sailor Cherie Morton over the weekend. It says she lived in Bakersfield for a bit, where she enlisted in the Navy.  Which explains why the Department of Defense said that's where she's from, although, as the story explains, she was born in Illinois and that's where her parents are now. Just another piece of the puzzle that is this case. No word yet on how she died.   --Chris George

A Sheriff's patrol car that was submerged in Isabella Lake in late February has been repaired and returned to service. The car cost about $2,000 to repair, Sgt. Ed Komin said. It was valued at $38,000. Deputies had been conducting a narcotics investigation on Feb. 24 and had arrested one suspect when they returned to their car and found it in the lake. Another suspect had apparently made his way to the car while deputies were arresting the first suspect, and he sent it...

The Arvin police are going to be cracking down on people not wearing seat belts next week. I just have to ask: Who doesn't wear a seat belt? I know there are still people who get killed in wrecks because they aren't wearing seat belts, but for the most part I think the police have won this war (94 percent of people wear seat belts according to the release.) How about spending...

A visiting judge dismissed a second-degree murder charge against Donna Brinkman in an alcohol-involved traffic death. Just two months before the incident, Brinkman signed an acknowledgment that if she killed someone while driving drunk, she could be charged with second-degree murder. The prosecution used that declaration as part of his justification for second-degree murder charges against her. The judge ruled the declaration was not enough. He said she didn't have a malevolent heart. Her...

Family members feed meals to Danny Espinoza and monitor his vitals in fear that he might get a stroke. Dorothy Anne Walters' family still struggles to heal after their loved one was killed by a car driven by Espinoza, Two angles of a tragic story left me perplexed writing this story. It's easy to not feel sorry for Espinoza as he lays immobile in his bed. It's easy to understand how much Walters meant to her family and how she died so senselessly. Their entire job involves picking up mostly strangers, sometimes in dark, scary areas, and taking them to unknown places.   There’s no knowing what can happen when they pick someone up, cab drivers in Bakersfield say. Sometimes, a pickup can turn bad, as is the case with Jose Ramirez.   They’re worried, and they need help, they told me during a recent ride-along.   I’m working on a story on the dangers of cab driving in Bakersfield. Essentially, they...

Steven Mayer just e-mailed this update from the courtroom. I'll admit I thought this was gonna be a closer run affair and not a home run for the prosecution. Jerry Dodd, a former Sheriff's captain who retired in 1979 and opened his own private investigation agency, died recently. Sheriff Donny Youngblood said Dodd was his captain when Youngblood worked undercover in narcotics in the mid-70's. Among the things Youngblood remembered about Dodd were his leadership qualities and a very distinctive laugh. "(Dodd) was a very personable employee who was liked by everyone," Youngblood said.
