The defense in the murder case against Wayne Perkins and Anthony Jones stressed to the jury in their arguments  Wednesday that key witness Torino Jackson wasn’t credible enough to convict anyone. But in his final closing statement on Thursday, prosecutor David Zulfa pointed out seven other witnesses, plus physical evidence, backed up the...

Okay, this intrigues me. The question two reputed gang members asked another man in south Bakersfield was Watts up? The man to his subsequent demise replied, "Watts up." It's not that these guys can't spell. It's that Watts refers to Watts Drive which is in the heart of Country Boy Crips territory. Those asking the quested are reputed East Side Crips gang members. By asking the Watts question, they were trying to confirm the other guy was Country, and not in a twangy way. When...

Typewriters, CD players, flat screen TVs. These are just some of the things inmates in Kern County jails and prisons have access to. But should they? A story in today's paper highlights certain electronic privileges inmates have. Some people say restricting inmates from accessing these electronics makes a bad situation worse. It's no way to rehabilitate people because when they re-enter society, they have a tougher time adjusting. But others say inmates in prisons should be held...
