A fire on Piute Mountain has burned more than 1,000 acres Sunday, causing some small communities to be recommended for evacuation.
About 25 structures in the French Meadow and Brown's Meadow areas are threatened by the fire, according to Capt. Alex Entenman. Sheriff's deputies are going door to door to recommend evacuation. Many of the structures in the area are vacation homes, Entenman said. Only a "handful" are use year round, he said.

A fire destroyed an outbuilding Friday afternoon in Ford City.
Firefighters battled the blaze at about 2:30 p.m., according to the Kern County Fire Department. The outbuilding, which was used for storage, is at 501 Elm Street. Ford City is near Taft.
Firefighters prevented the fire from going to a nearby home, the KCFD said. Investigators did not know Friday afternoon the estimated damage of the blaze.
There were no injuries and the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Police said the five juveniles arrested in connection with the vicious beating death of an 81-year-old man range from 13 to 15 years old.
Two of the juveniles are 13, two are 14 and one is 15, police said. They are accused of beating Ezequiel Jimenez Perez as Perez collected aluminum cans in an alley Saturday morning.
They returned at least once to continue beating Perez, who died of his injuries the next day.
The juveniles are being held on suspicion of murder, robbery and conspiracy....
The two surviving victims of a Monday morning fatal crash remain in serious condition at Kern Medical Center, officials said Tuesday morning.
Two people were killed and two others were critically injured in a single-vehicle, alcohol-involved crash on Highway 99 near Panama Lane.
The driver, 21-year-old Michael Montgomery of Bakersfield, will be charged with felony drunken driving once he is released from Kern Medical Center, California Highway Patrol officers said.

New information from the California Highway Patrol is that Deputy James Throne was not wearing a seat belt when he was broadsided and killed by another deputy.
But the impact was so severe, it would not have mattered if he was wearing a seat belt, CHP officer Greg Williams said.
