Melissa Blanchard loved 2-year-old Kayli Bearden. At least that what she says on her MySpace page.
The 19-year-old is accused of killing the toddler. Blanchard was taking care of Kayli last Sunday when she started having trouble breathing. She died at the hospital. An autopsy revealed Kayli had blunt force trauma to her skull, police said.

On Valentine’s Day, Ralph Maese and two other inmates at Kern Valley State Prison near Delano allegedly used a stabbing weapon and their fists to end the life of a fellow prisoner.
Maese was charged with first-degree murder in that case and was sent to the local jail to await trial. It was there, at Lerdo, that he attacked and cut up another inmate in July using a bladed weapon.

Two UPS delivery vans caught on fire Monday night at the business.
City and county firefighters battled the fires in the vehicles parked inside the UPS building at 3800 Sillect Ave. at about 11:15 p.m., according to Battalion Chief Darryl Whisnand with the Kern County Fire Department.

A 26-year-old Bakersfield man who allegedly possessed $2.5 million worth of drugs will serve up to two years, eight months in prison.
Jaime Duran Jr. pleaded no contest Thursday to possession of controlled substances and possession of narcotics for sale.
Nine other felony drug charges were dismissed in a plea bargain.
Duran was arrested last month after Bakersfield police seized more than $2.5 million worth of rock cocaine, cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana from his home....

The baby that was found dead in a dumpster in Taft has been buried. Photographer Henry A. Barrios was at the funeral and got some pictures. Here's the details from our last story.
The baby boy was discovered in a Dumpster in the south alley of the 400 block of Lucard Street, just north of Highway 33. An autopsy determined the baby spent 24 to 26 weeks in gestation. Normal gestation is around 40 weeks.

When Spring Kincaid was sentenced Wednesday to four years in prison for causing a crash that killed a Bakersfield man, the sentence seemed light compared to the 17-year prison sentence received by a Wasco man in June.
Of course, there were many important differences between the two vehicle death cases. For one, Gordon Tutton of Wasco had a much more serious criminal record leading up to the crash he caused in summer 2007.
But one difference may have saved Kincaid years of prison time....

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for a suspended Maricopa police officer accused of having sex with minors.

At age 82, Bertha Shepherd’s feet don’t work as well as they used to, so she uses her battery-powered scooter to get around.
