It was there, at Lerdo, that he attacked and cut up another inmate in July using a bladed weapon. As if that weren’t enough, when Maese was sent to Shafter court earlier this month for the assault at...

Hey breaking news junkies, we’ve got something new for you. The Breaking News Team is trying out Twitter. What is Twitter? Well its part social networking, like MySpace. But it’s also like blogging, only one sentence at a time. For our purposes Twitter is going to let us share the newsgathering process on a minute-by-minute level. What does that mean? And every once in a while the family or friends of a...

Elizabeth Conley finally uttered three words she had been waiting to say for the past 26 months -- “He’s coming home.”   Conley stood outside a courtroom Tuesday wiping tears from her face and talking to family members on her cell phone. Her son, John Henry Bryant, was found not guilty for the 2006 shooting death of Meko Seward at Rockin’ Rodeo. The nightclub was located on Rosedale Highway and has since closed because of the shooting and other incidents,...

Apparently, you don't need to swallow water to drown.  Officials are doing an autopsy on 17-year-old Sarah Foster, who they say drowned last night at a house on 3013 Hollins St. Her parents came home, couldn't find her, but eventually found her at the bottom of the pool. Police and coroner's officials say there's no indication anything else happened except that she drowned. But the coroner's office still has to do microscopic testing to determine the exact cause. She could have dry...

It's an amazing process to watch — 150 to 250 cases for misdemeanor arraignments that all get handled within a morning. Another batch of the same comes in the afternoon. It's believed that Division G of Kern County Superior Court handles more such cases in a day than any court in California. It's a process of deputy probation officers telling defendants if they plead guilty or no contest, they will get this punishment — likely the best deal they will get. Some 90 percent plead...

The way she saw it, it was either the bear or her grandchildren. A 7-foot, 400-pound bear, hungry for dog food left outside near Karen Chadwick’s rural Bodfish home, would not go away. The family of Leon Anderson Jr. says one BPD officer accidentally shot another, then killed Anderson and planted a gun to frame him, in a claim against the city. The claim includes a bunch of documents, which we've scanned here. There's the narrative, which tells the family's version of what happened; the coroner's report; and statements from two witnesses who claim they were abused by police.

At age 82, Bertha Shepherd’s feet don’t work as well as they used to, so she uses her battery-powered scooter to get around.   At least, she did until Monday.   That’s when the mobility scooter she bought about four years ago disappeared from her home in south Bakersfield.   “I got (the scooter) when they took my kidney out,” she said Tuesday. “I put it outside so I don’t have to depend on people to get my mail.”
