A 13-year-old boy was taken to San Joaquin Community Hospital Tuesday after he was found at the bottom of a pool in Shafter.The teen was found in the shallow end of the Shafter pool at 269 Poso Ave. at about 3 p.m., according to Sgt. Greg Richardson with the Shafter Police Department.

At least one home was destroyed Friday when two separate fires ravaged an Oildale neighborhood.
Firefighters found a house engulfed in flames in the 600 block of El Tejon Avenue at about 5:30 p.m., according to Battalion Chief Darryl Whisnand of the Kern County Fire Department.
Whisnand did not know if anyone was in the home when the fire started or what may have caused the blaze.

A fight broke out Thursday evening between about several hundred inmates at the prison in Tehachapi.
Up to 200 people got into a fight at about 7 p.m. at the California Correctional Institution, according to Lt. Brian Parriott, spokesman for the prison. The fight was apparently between inmates from southern California and people from Mexico.
Two inmates were injured and taken to local hospitals. No correctional officers were injured.

At least that’s what Spanish researchers are saying in a new study that says young men who die suddenly after being arrested may be victims of a new syndrome similar to one that kills wild animals after being captured.
They investigated 60 cases of sudden unexplained deaths in Spain after incarcerations. All died within 24 hours after an arrest. Almost all were male with an average age of 33.
