The story was about arresting domestic violence offenders, but along the way acts of courtesy marked the exercise. One man already handcuffed needed to call his work to let them know he wouldn't be in today. Detective Lonnie Mills held his own cellphone to the man's ear so the call could be made. (It's probably just an aside that the man told his employer he was hurting so bad he could hardly move, though the man walked to the patrol car just fine.) Mills got the man outside his home before...

Law enforcement is trying an unusual approach in dealing with one of California's most notorious motorcycle gangs. It doesn't involve wiretaps or massive gang arrests. Instead, the government is seeking to gain ownership of the Mongols motorcycle gang's trademarked name. If successful, "anyone caught wearing a Mongols patch could have it seized by law enforcement on the spot," according to the Los Angeles Times. -- BNT member Jason Kotowski

Autumn Fire Safety      With summer behind us and shorter days ahead, one might believe the threat of fire has diminished. The varied fire safety challenges of the approaching seasons present hazards equal to, if not potentially more destructive than the summer months. While many regions of the country are entering the wet season, Southern California is entering what is typically the most destructive period for wild fires.  The current dry spell, which has...
