No arrangements have been made by NASA for a rare public viewing of the landing. NASA’s first choice for a landing site is always Kennedy, where shuttle...

Yep, it's that time again. Time for your weekly crime map and your friendly neighborhood analysis courtesy the BNT. Check out the latest crime maps. Once again the focus is on burglaries. We're up slightly this week to 126 from Nov. 17 to 23. That's only three more than the week before, but it's still down from our high of 150+ a couple weeks ago. Robberies dropped by more than half, from 11 to just 5. Thefts also dropped from 50 to 35. Auto thefts were down slightly, from 31 last...

We got a voicemail from a woman who is convinced that the reason we didn't run the names of the two kids accused of killing a local elderly couple is because they are white. I'll point out that we were the first news organization in town to have the names and we jumped through lots of hoops to get them outside the normal channels. Not sure how that's supressing the information.

It’s a shame that’s what the tiny island just 17 miles north of Venezuela – arguably one of the safest islands in the Caribbean – has come to be synonymous with. The case is gaining momentum once...

Jason Kotowski got the scoop: Demitris King is guilty. Here's the story he filed from the courtroom... The fifth, and final, juvenile involved in the beating death of an 81-year-old man over the summer was found guilty on Tuesday afternoon. Judge Jon Stuebbe said there was more than enough evidence to prove that King participated in the attack on Perez. King sat silently while his mother, Lillie Randle, hung her head and cried. Sentencing was scheduled for Dec. 4. The judge gave his...

Last week you might recall our crime map showed a big jump in the number of burglaries in the city. There were 152 during the week that ended Nov. 9. This week that number dropped to just 123. That's almost exactly the same as the week ending Nov. 2. Check out the latest crime maps. What about non-burglaries? Well everything is almost exactly the same as last week. There were 31 auto theft cases, compared to 32 the week before. And thefts and robbery were exactly the same with 50 and 11 for...

Jury selection began Monday in the first-degree murder trial of three alleged gang “shot callers” — and the judge isn't taking any chances when it comes to the size of the jury pool. Early Monday, the courtroom looked something like a movie theater, with extra folding chairs filling every available space. About 120 prospective jurors were expected, and another 120 are set to arrive Tuesday or Wednesday. Justice beat reporter Steven Mayer was hoping to sit in for an hour or...

Every now and then I strive to be somewhat poetic when writing an article. I tried again today but the idea was unanimously shot down. The story was about burglaries at local fitness centers and I decided to compare the ease of burglarizing cars in gym parking lots to the sometimes harsh reality of nature. My opening lines: "A gym parking lot through a burglar's eyes probably looks a lot like a gazelle straggling behind the herd does to a lion. Easy prey." Was my editor right to...

KGET has a story about a sex offender threatening some reporters who had come to interview him about moving to their small town of Riverbank, near Modesto. The whole incident was caught on video. The local connection is that the sex offender, Darren Kawamoto, 44, once lived in Bakersfield in 2004. From KGET:  That kind of publicity led to Kawamoto’s move from Bakersfield in 2004, after police here posted hundreds of posters warning his neighbors he was sex offender with a...

This is a reader question that we answered for an Ask The Californian: Q: What rights do we have against a hit and run driver that kills a pet?  We live on a “fast” part of Quailridge Road in Quailwood that has been a constant target for police traps, and Saturday morning our pet was run down in front of my children. The driver did not stop and we have a good idea of where they live.  Speeding is a major issue on our street and two pets have been killed in three months...

Check out the crime map this week. It's blue all over. Looks just like the electoral map. But here in Bakersfield, blue means change we really don't need. The (hard working and incredibly good looking) Breaking News Team's crime map is usually pretty blue. We code burglaries blue and because people typically commit more burglaries than any other crime we map, it shades the whole map. But last week, ending Sunday, we had 124 burglaries. This whole month, burglaries have been on the rise,...

But the message on my work phone Wednesday afternoon still scared the hell out of me. “Dad, you need to come home right now.” It was the voice of my 14-year-old son, Nathan.
