I was called for jury duty this week and spent a half day or so watching a jury being seated for a misdemeanor trial. This was my second time being called for jury duty. Both times I've ended up being called into a courtroom but never seated. I’ve never even been questioned. (It's kind of a disappointment since I would love to see if I  actually would end up on a jury, since my job is all about covering courts.) As always, there seemed to be a few people who desperately wanted...

A college student rings the bell and asks whether you want to buy books to help her raise money for a trip abroad. Yeah, sure. She’s probably just trying to get your personal information and rip you off, right? That’s what some people residents thought, and that’s also what KGET Channel 17 reported Thursday. But that’s not the case, Bakersfield police say. Sgt. Greg Terry said the department has received several calls regarding similar incidents in the city this...

Working together with a Home Depot employee to steal these items, along with others worth anywhere from $12,000 to $16,000 = jail time. Last week, police arrested an employee at the Home Depot on Ming Avenue after they found he was letting two of his alleged accomplices walk out with thousands in items. The sentencing of a Bakersfield man found guilty of abducting and raping two women in 2006 has been delayed until late April because the defense attorney is asking for a new trial. The power went out here at The Californian and to 1,700 other customers in the downtown area this afternoon. The power went out just before 2 p.m. and came back on around 3:15 p.m. The cause? Apparently a palm frond hit the power lines somewhere around 24th Street. Anyone out there lose their power? Fortunately we've got a generator to power our essentials (computers, phones, police scanners!) But it was getting warm in here. -- Davin McHenry, BNT

Seven people were injured in a crash on Highway 58 on Monday afternoon. Rufino Olivera, 44, was driving family and friends west on Highway 58 just east of Bealeville Road when he believed his brakes failed, California Highway Patrol officers said. He couldn't slow his 2005 Nissan Pathfinder and drove up a dirt hillside, striking a large drainage pipe. Olivera steered back towards the roadway and the Pathfinder rolled several times, blocking the westbound Highway 58 lanes, officers said....

Recently I wrote a story about stalkers, specificially focusing on the case of a man who allegedly stalked and killed a gas station clerk last year. I was wondering if anyone has any creepy or strange cases they've dealt with over the years regarding someone stalking them or maybe an ex who was acting in a similar manner. How did you handle it? Was it necessary to get police involved? -- Breaking News Team reporter Jason Kotowski

Deadlock (again). It's heading toward 2 p.m. Sunday, and state lawmakers still have no budget deal, reports indicate.   I have calls out to Ashburn, Florez, Gilmore and Fuller, though who knows if they can even get to a phone. Everyone has been in lockdown.   A Fuller aide told me they were supposed to reconvene at 1 p.m.; KQED's Twitter log indicates  they've just been allowed to get showers and food.   Florez just emailed me with this just-posted online Sac Bee...

I've been around too long. I thought the man accused of killing the 8-year-old skateboarder might have a great defense on whether he was drunk at the time. Lawrence Ray Thompson, 54, was arrested on charges of vehicular manslaughter while driving under the influence of alcohol and felony hit and run in the Wednesday night death of Brandon Brownen, the California Highway Patrol reported. But it was that detail of how officers waited to get a search warrant before they entered Thompson's...

Taft Police Department's shift bulletin is rather quaint. We get a copy faxed to us every day and it's still addressed to an editor who left many years ago and more often than not it's upside down when we receive it. Officers contacted reporting party regarding the theft of his bicycle. After a brief search the bicycle...

According to a story on KERO-23's Web site, the Kern County Sheriff's substation at Buttonwillow is one of a few county buildings still not up to current safety standards. The building is one of 13 left over from a 1981 list of 143 unreinforced building that either had to be demolished or reinforced, the story says. Buttonwillow residents are...
