On Monday, the Dallas Police Department decided to move to a plain-English style of communicating and dropping cop talk in police codes.
No more 10-4. No more 187. No more Code 4. Now it’s just “got it,” “murder,” and “everything’s under control.”
The purpose, the department told The Dallas Morning News, is to make communications more universal and less complicated. And apparently it’s a nationwide trend.
What about here?...
Murder charges have been dismissed against two teens, while four others will continue to answer to charges connected to a fatal shooting in November that killed a 19-year-old man.

Sometimes you'll fire two shots and then have to replace the magazine. Another scenario will involve the gun jamming. When you're further away you might be told to fire from a kneeling position.
And once the shots are fired you need to look all around and change position as you would in an actual shooting.
It's a lot to keep track of. And with all that on your mind, you need to hit the target with at...

A fire in a southwest apartment caused $50,000 damage Tuesday afternoon and left 12 homeless, Bakersfield firefighters said.
But an aggressive attack kept the fire from spreading to other apartments or buildings, Battalion Chief Ken Wiggins said.
Flames in the dining room and kitchen of the apartment at 5804 Stockdale Highway broke out windows, Wiggins said.
An unknown number of occupants in the apartment got out safely.
Wiggins said four adults and eight children live in the apartment....

Impersonating a police officer is a rare crime that received quite a lot of attention earlier this year after a spate of incidents in Bakersfield.
There have been arrests in two of the cases, but two others remain unsolved.
In late 2008, there were three incidents where Eastern Indian men were pulled over by impersonators using police lights, Bakersfield police said. In one incident, a person yelled at the driver and in the other two the drivers were ordered to remove parts of their...

The bad news is there’s not much you can do to prevent your mailbox from being broken into. The good news is that if you follow the postmaster’s advice the chances of losing valuable mail are slim.
“Pick up your mail every day when you get home from work,” Bakersfield Postmaster Jim Brouillard said. “Most thefts occur overnight.”
A couple of community mailboxes were broken into recently in the Campus Park area. Brouillard said the mailboxes have been...
A judge has upped the bail by $350,000 for Clyde Bivins, the man who on separate occasions became involved in a SWAT standoff, led police on a chase and threatened to bomb at Memorial Hospital.
He is back in custody, prosecutor Scott Spielman said. Judge Michael Bush increased his bail to $500,000 because of his potential public threat and flight risk.
Bivins, 51, is facing felony charges of threats with intent to terrorize and making a false bomb report related to a hospital bomb...
Ever been to court and left feeling like you got the short end of the stick? Well, a Web site called RobeProbe.com lets you rate a judge's performance based on an array of factors including knowledge of law and absence of racial bias.
The site claims it's "the only comprehensive website that allows lawyers and litigants to rate the judicial performance of judges."
I tried looking up a couple of local judges but couldn't find any listings. Check it out, but be warned, the site...

Charges weren't filed until November after the October arrest of Manuel Antonio Vicente. He...

About a week ago I did a story on local libraries and how police get very few reports of crime happening there. Well, some residents strongly disagreed with the notion that libraries are a safe place to hang out. I received several responses indicating that, at Beale Memorial Library alone, you'll find couples (of all persuasions) having sex in the bathroom, porn being viewed, drug users and kids running wild. That doesn't even include the alleged graffiti and vandalism going on. Someone...

EUREKA, Calif. (AP) — Authorities believe that plane debris that washed ashore in Humboldt County belongs to a single-engine plane that went missing March 1. The Diamond DA40 flown by Vladislav Milushev went missing after Milushev radioed for clearance to land at Arcata-Eureka airport. He never radioed again to confirm he landed. The Coast Guard suspended its search last week after finding no signs of the plane. Milushev and a passenger had flown from Orlando, Fla., and made...
A murder case and pregnancy has helped delay the trial against the man accused of crashing into a Sheriff’s deputy, killing him, until October,
The case against Daniel Patrick Willsey that started in 2006 case has suffered a series setbacks thanks to destroyed blood evidence and the appointment of new attorneys, among other reasons.
But now, the case has been scheduled for trial in Oct. 5. Two main reasons are because:
