The killing of four police officers in Oakland over the weekend left the BNT wondering about our own history. Had we ever lost that many officers in one day? Thankfully the answer was no. The worst single day was in 1986 when three men from the Kern County Sheriff's Department were killed in a plane crash. The accident happened three years — to the day — after another plane crash killed two sheriff's reserve deputies. Here are more details on all six times more than one officer...

Bakersfield residents have suggested a few times that The Californian write about crimes committed here by outsiders — those not from Kern County. Their hypothesis is that people from neighboring big cities, say Los Angeles or Fresno, come here to commit crimes, and then make a getaway out of town.  Police and the district attorney’s office don't keep track of how many crimes are committed by outsiders, so we don't really know for sure how often they occur. But police...

I’m so confused. It has been widely reported on the Internet — since 1996 — that it is against the law in Bakersfield to have sex with Satan without a condom. Does that mean it’s okay to have sex with Satan in Bakersfield as long as you use a condom? Is there any such restriction in Fresno? But wouldn’t that imply that Satan would have to be a woman? I always thought Satan was a man. With horns and a tail. And a nasty sunburn. We needed to ask the...

Passing the Sheriff's Department's firearms training isn't as simple as point and shoot. Sometimes you'll fire two shots and then have to replace the magazine. Another scenario will involve the gun jamming. When you're further away you might be told to fire from a kneeling position. And once the shots are fired you need to look all around and change position as you would in an actual shooting. It's a lot to keep track of. And with all that on your mind, you need to hit the target with at...

Several bloggers at the Santa Maria Times didn't take kindly to a report that the Santa Maria Speedway is dedicating its 2009 season to a racing photographer that caused a fatal crash on Highway 166.  Some sympathy was expressed, however, because the photographer, Wayne Stuart DeLangie, 41, also died in the Friday night chain-reaction crash that killed Bakersfield truck driver Ricardo Zamora, 27. Impersonating a police officer is a rare crime that received quite a lot of attention earlier this year after a spate of incidents in Bakersfield. There have been arrests in two of the cases, but two others remain unsolved. In late 2008, there were three incidents where Eastern Indian men were pulled over by impersonators using police lights, Bakersfield police said. In one incident, a person yelled at the driver and in the other two the drivers were ordered to remove parts of their...
