District Attorney Ed Jagels said Thursday that the target gang program he announced last summer has been "very successful" with 85 percent of 105 shot callers being in custody, dead, moved out of state or the subject of warrants and pending cases.

For the second time in less than a week, an envelope containing a suspicious substance — which turned out to be harmless — was sent to a top law enforcement officer in Bakersfield.
This one was addressed to District Attorney Ed Jagels and was discovered Tuesday at about 9:30 a.m. when an employee opened the envelope, Bakersfield police said.

Upon opening the piece of mail, staff found that it contained a white powdery substance.

One motorcyclist was killed and another was injured in a three-vehicle crash Sunday evening on Highway 178 near Onyx, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The 5th District Court of Appeal in Fresno upheld the conviction of Andre Ball in the Dec. 27, 2005 shooting death of Deondre Marzette at Valley Plaza.
The appellate court rejected several grounds Ball's attorneys had raised to try to overturn the conviction in the gang-related shooting death.

A 10-month-old baby nearly drowned in a backyard pond in southwest Bakersfield Tuesday afternoon, according to the Bakersfield Police Department.

A 20 year old Bakersfield woman was killed Tuesday night when the car she was riding in drifted off the road and into a power pole south of Bakersfield.
The car was heading west on Bear Mountain Boulevard around 9:30 p.m. and had passed Ashe Road when the driver, Guy Rollins Jr., 28, allowed the car to veer off the road, according to the California Highway Patrol. Rollins suffered moderate injuries in the wreck.
