Clyde Bivins, the man that prompted Aera Energy to barricade itself against him, wrote us a letter. Here's his complaint. He was getting $3,000 for a long term disability policy he had with Aera, but now he's getting about $1,000. The reason for the difference is he's getting other types of pay — Social Security or state disability — which is offsetting the amount he would be getting with the long term disability policy. I visited the Bakersfield Police Department Thursday morning for the chief's annual meetup with local media. Some interesting tidbits were thrown out, including some grim budget numbers for the department. Like everyone else, they have been hit by the economy and have lost 29 sworn officer positions and a dozen or so civilian positions thanks to a hiring freeze. Those cuts gutted some of the department's special units, including a much loved team that tackled long-term problems and...

District Attorney Ed Jagels said Thursday that the target gang program he announced last summer has been "very successful" with 85 percent of 105 shot callers being in custody, dead, moved out of state or the subject of warrants and pending cases. Using six of the worst examples, five are behind bars and one is dead, Jagels said. Three were just convicted in a triple murder case. The program is so successful that it is adding another gang, the Colonia Bakers, to its target list....

Bakersfield police received a report of a mountain lion near the bike path at Lake Truxtun on Thursday at about 7:30 a.m. An officer went out to look for it, but found nothing, Sgt. Greg Terry said. These solitary animals try to avoid contacts with humans. Unlike most wild cats, they hunt not only at night but during the day as well. In the wild, they usually prey on large mammals.

The Kern County Fire Department was called about 7:26 p.m. to the scene about 15 miles west of Frazier Park, but the very steep cliff and approaching darkness made a rescue dangerous, firefighters said.
