About 100 homes were initially threatened Monday morning as a series of fires broke out Monday morning near Wofford Heights, Lake Isabella and Bodfish, Kern County firefighters reported.
As of noon, the fire that began at 9:30 a.m. was going away from the homes, spokesman Sean Collins said.
But an alert was sent out to about 650 homes in the Wofford Heights area warning them of the fire, he said. No evacuations had been ordered he said.

About 4,700 inmates at Kern Valley State Prison near Delano drank bottled water over the weekend because of a test at one of the prison's well showed the water was contaminated, officials said Monday.
A test showed elevated levels of ecoli, spokesman Lt. Xavier Cano said. A new test on Monday morning showed the water was within safety limits and normal water delivery was restored, he said.

Five people were injured Thursday morning as the driver of a van tried to avoid a fallen tree on South Union Avenue, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Israel Fuentes, 55, of Lamont was driving a 1995 Nissan Quest just south of Bear Mountain Boulevard at 5:20 a.m. when he saw a tree that had fallen in the roadway, officers said.

A 16-year-old bicyclist suffered major head injuries when he and a SUV collided in an Oildale intersection Wednesday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Jeff Harlan was riding north towards the intersection of China Grade Loop and McCray Street around 1:30 p.m. when the accident happened. The driver of the SUV, 55-year-old Theresa Ann Moser was heading west on China Grade Loop, according to the CHP.

Donna Kathleen Brinkman was convicted in the July 28, 2007, death of 76-year-old Robert Morrison on Highway 33 in McKittrick.

Four Bakersfield firefighters have been sent to help put out fires in other counties.
Captains John Germanetti and Pat Caprioli went to the Ponderosa Fire in Monterey County and Engineers Terry Lyons and Tim Ortiz went to Tuolumne County for the Knight Fire.
The Ponderosa fire is 20 miles southwest of King City. It started Saturday and has grown to 350 acres by Monday morning.
The Knight Fire is 10 miles north of Twain Harte. It started July 26 and has grown to 4,594 acres.
