Turn Signals?

I had an interesting conversation with my father last night.  We were talking about the number of law officers that we see that fail to obey simple traffic rules like turn signals.  I was wondering how everyone felt about this?  Do you think that they should be held to the same standards of the road as they make us uphold.  As well, shouldn’t they have to follow the laws that they could technically pull anyone of us over as a form of “probable cause”?  Or is there some law or rule that exempts them from this that I don’t know about.

Personally, if feel if you are going to enforce the law, you should follow it to the best of your ability, but mostly want to see how the rest of Bakersfield feels.

I'd just like it if they'd put on their sirens before blowing through a red light so I know to not enter the intersection even though I have a green light. Nearly got sideswipped at White and Gosford a couple months back by a cop doing that.

I think you and your father need to find something else to gripe about. You are the type of person that if you called in to report a crime in progress at your house, you would bitch because it took the police too long to get there. You have no clue about what the real world is like. But that is so typical.

While I value your comment, I have no problem with the service the fine men and woman of law enforcement provide us.  However, I think you miss the point between conversation and gripeing.  There is a distinct difference in my family.  Simply put that is why I said conversation not bitching and moaning.

And to address your blind attack on me, no I wouldn't be the type of person that would complain if the police took to long to get to my house if a crime was being commited.  I would probably just take care of it with my shotgun and let them clean it up when they got there.

I bet your the type of person that just blindly attacks people without even giving them regard or making a thoughtful insite.  I bet your kids sercelty hate you.

Technically,  cops IN MARKED CARS don't have to obey all of the traffic laws. However, if they cause an accident, they're supposed to really get their stones broke over it. Unfortunately, their buddies cover for them and sweep as much of it under the rug as they can.

Btown, taking care of it yourself with your shotgun in California will get you put into the system. You can thank your liberal politicians for that.

Chill out and give law enforcement a break.  Did you get a ticket for not using your turn signal so you are snibbling?  I HATE drivers that let you sit there to make a turn and don't put on a signal.  How much effort does it take?  AND it is the courteous thing to do.  I just yell out the window "Nice turn signal, a**hole."  Always makes me feel better.  Btown, next time you see an officer not turn on his signal, try my method.  It will get you less time than the gun.  Anger management might be an alternative.

I get it not BTOWNTV  Bitch To Officers When No TV   Pay the dang cable bill and watch Animal Planet.  It will soothe the nerves.

Well I'm sure you won't see any officers on their cell phones either. LOL

Old blue  -- you do seem to be a tad cantancerous alot of the time. I guess for cops and especially correctional officers it comes with the territory  -- dealing with "scumbags" all day - every day.   But - aren't you retired?

posted by H8cloz on Jul 7, 2008 at 07:51 PM

Unless they're code 2 or 3, I think they should make an effort to obey the traffic laws like everybody else. Yesterday I saw a KCSD car do an un-signalled lane change while the deputy was yakking on a hand held cell phone. Disgusting. Come on guys, people are looking for you to set a good example.

You know, I'm finding that many people here on these blogs are nothing more than grade A jerks. The whole point of this exercise is to strike up conversations, get to know people's opinions and perhaps make some friends. Some of you make this whole thing a waste of time. Btowntv is just trying to have a conversation, If you have nothing to contribute except bitching and moaning about his blog, please go somewhere else. Some of us would like to have an adult conversation. Thank you for your cooperation. Have a nice day.

H8cloz...........I agree with that 100% I only posted a few times and got slammed by this old retired guy for no reason, I guess he just wanted to be a jerk. I seen a KCSO hit his lights at a red light on roberts ln and turn them off as soon as he had run thru the light.......a few minutes later he was sitting at standard park restroom! LOL

I guess -- but I think that cops get such a bad taste for civilians, and only regard each other as "human"- that maybe they should get free counceling upon retirement   -- from a reformed cop of course.

What's up with the attack on our law officers.  Hold your head high Old Blue, i definitely know what it is like to express opinions and have everyone in here jump down your throat.  This is such a crabby group.

posted by vwilroy on Jul 7, 2008 at 08:08 PM

Ya just got to have a sense of humor when you blog.  I don't think any of this is meant to attack.  It is just a stimulant for the "conversation"  .  Put on your hard hat and blog, blog, blog.  Love you all.

And no disrespect old blue  -- where would we be without you! .....   and it's pretty much a universal condition - most all cops and CO's. -- so it would happen to us civillians if we walked in you're shoes...... but life is too short to be bitter about anything.  ( :

Well, when ya gotta go, ya gotta go! That's why we carry zip lock bags and an empty bottle on the sailplane. Can't just pull over, you know!

I have nothing but the greatest respect and admiration for anyone who puts themselves on the line for us. Police, Firefighters, Paramedics, U.S. Military...all of them are heroes to me. Especially the ones who set a good example for us and our kids. How do we expect our kids to respect law enforcement when even a very, very small percentage of them act like inconsiderate jerks. People in law enforcement should strive to set the example. It's part of the job. I think that most of them would agree.

I think cops should have more freedom to "deal" with perps on there own terms.   When I first started getting arrested in the 70's for alchohol related stuff, I would get a little cocky down at the station.  I got "schooled" a couple of times and they never had any more problems with me during my "career."

Besides I think having to just listen to the junk these guys will say to them, without being able to "respond" would make anyone resentful after a while.

I say take the handcuffs off'em and will see crime go down as well.

Sarge:  Where have you been Officer Billy..you let the burglar get away..

Officer Billy: Well Gee Whiz Sarge,  I was stuck at a red light...I didn't want Joe Public mad at me for running it... Ya gotta think of all those kiddies watchin..sides my prioritys are turnin on my blinker more than catchin the bad guys. You know how vicious they get on those Btown Blogs about what irresponsible drivers we are!!!

(I have 5 kids burglarized a few months ago..Im glad they are out there doin what it takes to catch the butt wipes in our society..oops DANG..maybe we oughta BAN cops too)

Cops are supposed to obey all the laws and enforce all the laws.  Sometimes that is not possible to do.  They are also permittted under the new cell phone law allowed to use a hand held communication device while driving so they are not breaking that law.  As far as the use of turn signals - the other day I followed a car that used their turn signals at every turn.  I wanted to thank the driver.  I noticed it because it is rare to see people following that law.

We are a society of laws~ and all of us should follow them.  Common courtesy~ now days that should read un-common courtesy, is a lost art.

Sys_mom-Bravo! Excellent advice.

This is an interesting topic, as I was told just not to long ago by a gracious BPD officer that in fact he "does not have to use his turn signal if he does not feel like it". At that point I gave up, even though I have many shots of said officer not using his turn signal. So if you see the BPD officer on the Enduro style bike #5, he is exempt from all traffic laws, even when not responding to a crime. =)

posted by siouxcityranch on Jul 8, 2008 at 11:51 AM

well Im sure many of you have forgotten to use a turn signal on occasion and if you say you didnt ur FIBBIN...An officer could quit possibly have something more important he is dealing with when hes on a call..someone says turn left..he turns left...

posted by Shwaine on Jul 8, 2008 at 01:10 PM

I don't mind a cop blowing through a red light even if all he's doing is going to get a donut or something trivial. I just want him to have his lights and sirens on when he does it so the traffic with the green light knows to stop. It's that whole obsession with safety thing that I have. Silly, I know.

I agree with Btowntv007 100%... this falls into the whole "Do unto others" thing.  I am sick of seeing officers of the law breaking what they protect with speeding, lack of signals for changing lanes, talking on the phone while driving, etc, etc, etc.  This (OBVIOUSLY) does not include points of time when they are on their way to a distress call!!  But at that time, lights are on and sirens are blaring accordingly... I'm talking about those times when they are simply cruising around or casually heading in a direction.

Lead by example Mr. Law... how can you expect us to do what you won't?

P.S. OldBlue56 either didn't take the time to actually read this post, or is a grumpy old fart who just wants to b!tch about something.

posted by OldBlue56 on Jul 8, 2008 at 03:09 PM

tja, I did read the post, and I usually only get grumpy and bitch about stupid people.

And would you PLEASE get off the cell phone issue. On duty officers are exempt from that law. Geez, stupid people....

posted by sincalryder on Jul 8, 2008 at 03:35 PM

Sounds like a technicality there OB. Cause I did read the law and yes it states that. But it is one of those many things that can be taken one way or the other depending on your view. I would take the phrase "In the scope of their duties" to mean the phone was being used for something that pertains to their job. But unless there is an accident which cause records to be pulled, who's going to go pull phone records for every officer they see on the phone. SO yeah one point for you in the "legal" sense.  But I do know the Sheriffs department did adapt their own policy banning cell phone use. Guess the BPD, California's version of the Super Troopers, will just keep in their merry little ways. =)

posted by OldBlue56 on Jul 8, 2008 at 03:46 PM

sincal, it's Sheriff Youngblood's prerogative to institute any policy he sees fit, but it's still legal for a deputy to use their cell phone while driving. He/she would just be violating department policy if they didn't use a hands free device. And there can be a very broad definition of what is "within the scope of their duties".

posted by siouxcityranch on Jul 8, 2008 at 05:40 PM

OB buddy..just shakin my head..they dont even get it..Its not like they are selling drugs or robbing banks..its minor traffic issues..just one of those given privledges for the job they do...always has been always should be..

Bartender gets free drinks.. Chef gets a free meal..Pilot gets a free flight..cop doesn have to use a turn signal..not like they will go from the right lane to the left slam on their brakes and put your grill through your windshield..

if they do that then you get a new set of teeth a new car..and quit possibly an all expense paid vacation to a destination of your choice

WHY WOULD YOU USE A TURN SIGNAL IN A LEFT TURN ONLY LANE?COPS REALLY GET IN A HURRY WHEN IT COMES TO SHIFT CHANGES I HAVE SEEN THAT HERE IN PHOENIX

Thank you everyone for your posts.

I wanted to clarify my postion on this just for the record.  First of all, it is true that we don't know what is going on inside of the cars.  They could be on a call albeit a non emergency one.  But I think all of us can agree that there are plenty of times that we seem them just cruising and thier are minor things they don't do.

Is it being nitpicky, of course it is.  However, my point of view is, they can use these "minor" offenses to pull anyone over if they deem it necessary.

Personally, if I got pulled over for not using my turn signal, I would be rather upset.  However, I always use mine, so there really isn't a problem.

And saying that officers are exempt from the law when they are on duty is a cop out.  I think that especially then is when they should be upholding them the most.

Does anyone know a peace officer that they can get the scoop on?

Let me put it in terms where every smart ass can understand.

"Does anyone know a peace officer that can they can ask to elaborate on the subject further?"

Although ice cream sounds nice.
