CalamityJanie - > Vita Brevis, Tempus Fugit! -> Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman

I'm probably dating myself here, but does anyone remember this astoundingly bizarre Norman Lear creation of the mid to late '70s? I was a great fan at the time, when I was also a Dark Shadows and All My Children addict. I did not know until recently that the first season of "MHMH" has been released on DVD. Watching it now (as a "grown-up"), it's a whole different experience.

The writing, though tacky, is meant to be that way. It's a giant soap opera spoof, with all the right elements. But the wonderful actors -- Louise Lasser, for one (a Woody Allen regular) and Mary Kay Place, for another (she went on to win awards for this show) -- bring a certain professional feeling to each episode.

I find myself anxious for the next  DVD to arrive (via Netflix) as I have not looked forward to any such thing in quite some time.  I don't remember how many seasons it ran maybe 2 or 3? ...but I do remember that Louise Lasser had to quit for "emotional reasons" and that the spinoff, "Fernwood Tonight" with Martin Mull, was almost as funny. I hope they keep releasing them.....

Check it out!

Yes, Calamity, I will date myself too, and admit to watching "MHMH" and "Dark Shadows."  I had to watch the latter at a friend's house because my mother didn't like the show.  I could only watch "MHMH" by sneaking out of bed at night and creeping down the hall to peer around the corner where my mother was watching it on TV.  It was one of the most absurd shows I'd ever seen, but that may have been what drew me to it.  [LOL].  I didn't start watching mainstream daytime soap operas until I was in college in the 80's.  I haven't watched them in years, however.

Yeah sure, I watched the show religiously. My Mom watched it with me. I remember it well. Louise Lasser and Mary Kay Place come to mind right away, and Dody Goodman, she was a riot. Her promiscuous daughter. The affair with the young cop. And how do I get that yellow color out of the wax on my floor. Seems like yesterday, damn I'm old !!

Ah, didn't Billy Crystal get his start there?  Yeah, I'm an old dog.  I remember Dark Shadows too.  And All My Children, well, I've just recently given up that addiction.  I've watched it on and off for years.  It was my break from reality.  Erica Kane is still a hot ole broad, though.

No, I think Billy Crystal got his start on a sitcom called "Soap."

How about any of the nighttime soaps of the 80's like "Dallas," "Knots Landing," or "Dynasty?"  Anybody watch those?  I loved "Knots Landing."

Actually, Billy Crystal started on SOAP (1977-1980) the other ( and more popular) soap opera spoof.

Oddly enough, I never got hooked on any of those nighttime soaps. But when "Melrose Place" came along later, I never missed an episode...and I mean that quite literally! Oh, that Bad Doctor Michael! Oh, that Conniving Kimberly! Alison and Billy -- what's up with THEM?

Oh yeah SOAP!  MHMH was on, right around the time I graduated High School (now that I've looked it up), then again, so was SOAP.  My bad.

Don't worry, Sage, I'll be turning these around real quick even though there are about 10 episodes on each disc.

Hope "they" get it together to release Season 2!!!
